Warren G. Harding High School (Warren, OH)

Worm02

Heisman
Through 7 games, the Raiders of Warren G. Harding, who are coached by Steve Arnold, are 7-0. They are currently scoring 78.1 ppg while giving up 60.6 ppg. They have faced some solid opponents thus far, but business will only begin to pick up as they head into 2008.

WGH's ability to score isn't because of the efforts of 1 player. In fact, only three players, Sheldon Brogdon, Fred Williams & Elijah Jordan, have started in all 7 games ths far. Not because they are the only legit scorers (Jordan can score, but he's more of a rebounder/defensive force), but because of how the rotation/matchups work. To date, 5 of WGH's players have scholarship offers. None of them currently has an offer from Ohio State, but they are all gaining more interest from more schools as the season progresses.

Sheldon Brogdon (#24)
6'0, 170 lbs
c/o 2009

Jan201220St20Vincent20229.jpg

Through 7 games, Sheldon Brogdon is averaging 21 points per game. He scores from outside, but his fearlessness to take on big men down low as he has dunked on opposing big men. He currently holds offers from Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Akron, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State (just to name a few) with several others closing in. Don't be surprised if the Bucks give him a look.

Desmar Jackson (#3)
6'5, 180 lbs
c/o 2009

1630014.jpg

Desmar Jackson's current average of 13.0 is very deceiving. He can score from anywhere on the court, but he doesn't always have to, especially at the point guard position. He can be flashy, but he doesn't let that get in the way of remaining consistant. His job is to keep his teammates involved, but he'll score his fair share of points. It's not all about scoring, and Jackson puts numbers in every column on the stat sheet. Looked great in a preseason scrimmage against Lakewood St. Edward, a top ten team nationally is led by Michigan State commit Delvon Roe. Jackson has shown that he isn't satisfied with one solid performance, and he knows that he has the attention of numerous colleges. With offers from schools the likes of Indiana, Wisconsin, Xavier, and Akron (just to name a few), Jackson is rated as Ohio's #1 basketball prospect for the class of 2009.

Chris Henderson (#21)
6'8, 205 lbs
class of 2008

1544125506_l.jpg

Chris Henderson is one of WGH's two players that are listed at 6'8. Height is good to have, but it's certainly not everthing. With that being said, Henderson also possesses the skills that he needs to get the most out of his size. He's aggressive on both ends of the court, runs the floor well, and he's good at finishing what his teammates start on fast breaks. Last season, Henderson had a solid performance against current Buckeye Kosta Koufos as he scored 18 points (dunking on Koufos twice) while grabbing 12 rebounds. That was a solid performance, but Henderson is not living in the past. He has work ahead of him, and he is looking toward leading his team to a goal that his school has never accomplished... a state championship. Wright State, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State are among those that have already offered, and many more eyes are still watching. Currently averaging 11.5 ppg.

Elijah Jordan (#44)
6'5, 200 lbs
class of 2008

Jan201220St20Vincent20167.jpg

Elijah Jordan is a versatile "big man" (for high school) who makes his name by crashing the boards. He can score, but like the rest of his teammates, he doesn't have to score 20 points a night for his team to be successful. He averages close to a double-double, and he is a key componet to WGH's success. He makes presence known on the defensive side of the ball as he is often found guarding bigger players down low, doing more than enough to hold his own. Youngstown State has offered.

Damien Eargle (#40)
6'8, 200
class of 2008

Jan201220St20Vincent20103.jpg

Late in the off-season, Damien Eargle gave UNC-Greensboro an early Christmas present when he signed a letter of intent to continue his athletic career there after high school. Currently averaging averaging a double double, scoring 15.7 a contest. Eargle is a force down low who can step outside and hit the 15-footer. Whenever the ball is in the air, whether it's coming off an opposing shooters hand or off the glass, Eargle goes up and gets it, which is what stands out teh most about him. Like Henderson, he also had a solid performance against Koufos last season (17 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks), and he has continued to look solid. Last night against Shaker Heights, he posted season highs with 28 points & 18 rebounds.

Fred Williams (#23)
5'11, 175 lbs
class of 2010

c120cr20WGH-MooneyBB203.jpg

It's very rare to see a high school basketball team bost 5 players with Division 1 offers, which is teh case for WGH. Currently, Fred Williams is not one of their players who can make that claim, but he has proven that he is good enough to start for the Raiders. That might sound odd, but 4 of his teammates are listed at 6'5 of taller, so starting Williams allows at least 1 of those players come off the bench so that all of the big men don't tire out at the same time. He isn't a player that's going to score in double digits every game, but he is a smart player who knows when and when not to put his foot on the gas. He's only a sophomore, so him holding his own with this group of guys will only make him an even better leader in the future. With all of the colleges that come to watch his teammates, they will also be able to get an early look at Williams. If WGH eventually reaches their ultimate goal of a state championship, Willaims' resume will look even more impressive, which would be great at this stage of his career.

Last night, WGH improved to 8-0 after a 71-62 victory over Canton GlenOak. Four Raiders scored in double figures, with Brogdon leading the way with 20. Eargle had 16 points & 10 rebounds, Fred Williams scored 10 points, and Henderson scored 12 points & snagged 9 rebounds. Jackson also had a solid performance with 9 points & 9 assists.

GlenOak, who dropped to 5-2, received some solid play from the guard position. C.J.McCollum scored 12 first quarter points, finishing with 18. Strom Sanders had a game high 22 points to lead the Eagles.

WGH opens 2008 with Massillon at home on January 4. Eight days later, WGH's highly anticipated matchup with Zanesville will take place at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

Warren Harding improved to 10-0 after they handed Zanesville their first lost of the year by the score of 60-58. WGH was up by 12 with 1:30 left in teh game, but Zanesville used a furious run to battle back, tying the score at 58 with 13 seconds remaining in the gaqme. Desmar Jackson, who had 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals for the Raiders, missed a three pointer wit about three seconds left, but Damian Eargle rebounded the ball and put it in teh basket as time expired. Eargle totaled 12 points & 9 rebounds. Sheldon Brogdon had 19 points, while Chris Henderson fell 2 points short of a double-double with 8 points & 10 rebounds. WGH had a +14 edge in rebounds, which ended up being the story of the game.

Zanesville is as good as advertised, and they deserve an awful lot of credit for not throwing in the towel late in the game. Both teams have a shot to make it back to Columbus in March, so we'll have to see what happens. Lots of basketball left to be played.

Harding's block party

Raiders survive, beat Bearcats in district semifinals

By LOU CALI JR. Tribune Chronicle correspondent

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS ? Steve Arnold paced around the locker room, beads of sweat covering a good portion of his shaved head, before asking no one in particular, ??Do we have any aspirin in here???

Thursday night?s Division I district semifinal had taken its toll on the Warren G. Harding coach.

With 3 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the contest, it looked like the Raiders? magical season was going to end ? as far as their goals are concerned ? prematurely. Bedford had a 59-52 lead and, more importantly, all the momentum the undersized Warrensville Heights High School gymnasium could hold, thanks to a 7-0 run.
Brogdon had 18 points for the winners while Chris Henderson added 11 and Damian Eargle 10.

??We came out and Sheldon hit a big 3-pointer,?? said Jackson, who finished with 22 points and six rebounds. ??That pumped us up. We got back in it after that.??

Warren Harding 81, Cleveland Heights 71
The Raiders scored 12 fast-break points to build a 26-12 lead, before Heights closed to within 49-47 midway through the third.
Harding, getting eight more points in transition, pushed its lead to 65-53 with 5:40 left. The Tigers rallied again, trimming the Harding lead to 74-71 on Travis Kelce's 3-point shot with two minutes left, but couldn't score again.
Senior forward Quintus Teer led Cleveland Heights with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kelce, a 6-6 senior forward, totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds despite playing just 19 minutes because of foul trouble. Senior guard Chuck Turnbo and junior guard Sir Christian Williams scored 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Harding was paced by junior guard Sheldon Brogdan (28 points), 6-4 junior point guard Desmar Jackson (23 points) and 6-8 senior forward Chris Henderson (16 points, 12 rebounds).

Hey Worm, or anyone else who wants to respond. I have a stupid question that I hope someone can satisfy my curiousity with an answer. Whatever happened to Warren Western Reserve high school. When I was a kid in the 70's it was one of the top football programs in the state, and put out a bunch of big time players. I assume it has closed since you never here of a player coming from there anymore. Mods, if this post is a waste of everyones time, just delete it and I'll get the story some other time. Thanks...

Warren Western Reserve was a high school from 1966 through 1989, and they had a very successful football program as they compiled an overall record of 153-35. In 1972, they won the first ever OHSAA playoff championship. They made it to the championship game in 1973, but they lost to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 14-3.

They fall of the steel mills hit the Mahoning Valley very hard, and when the jobs left, so did many people. Due to the decline in population, Harding & Reserve consolidated prior to the 1990-91 school year. The interesting thing about it was that Reserve's nickname was the Raiders, and their colors were black & gold. On the other hand, Harding's nickname was the Panthers, and their colors were white & red. The "deal" was that Harding would keep the high school, but Reserve would keep the colors. To this day, many of the "older" alumni of both schools disagree with that decision, and some won't support Harding at all because of it.

Reserve has been junior high/middle school since the consolidation. It's still in pretty good shape, but the city of Warren is in the process of building new schools, 4 K-8 buildings and a new high school. One of the K-8 buildings (Lincoln) opened this past fall, while one (Willard) is currently under construction. Both are on Warren's east side, with Lincoln being on the northern part down the street from Harding. I'm still uncertain about what's going to happen to Reserve's building when they build the two schools on the west side, but they haven't even started building them yet. The new high school, which will stil be called Warren G. Harding, is scheduled to open this fall.

BTW, Harding won the 1900 Division 1 state championship in football. They finished 14-0 and were 5th in the USA Today. Some notable players from that team include the Omar Provitt (the #1 rated receiver in the country for the class of 1992), Myron Elzy, Leshun Daniels, and the late Korey Stringer. Ofcourse, Stringer & Daniels both played at Ohio State before spending time in the NFL, while Elzy eventually had a tryout in the NFL (for the Seattle Seahawks I believe). FWIW, Provitt is the father of current WGH basketball standout Desmar Jackson.

Maybe a little more than you asked for, but everyone knows that I like to "talk," lol.

FWIW, Harding went 14-0

Thanks for the info worm02. That satisfies some curiousity. Now, for a stupid story of my own. I dated a girl in college for a short while that had grown up in the WWR school system before moving up to Mich. for high school. A classmate of hers in Warren was Buck Balou, who later was the starting quarterback for the Univ. of GA. when Hershel Walker was there. Even with a tough economic enviroment, Warren sure has put out alot of top end athletes over the years. Thanks..

That story is far from stupid. In fact, the Browner brothers (Ross, Joey, Keith, and Jim), who all played in the NFL, graduated from Warren Western Reserve. Their family doesn't live in Warren anymore, but they have sons who have contributed elsewhere.

FWIW, WGH has six former football players who will be in next weekend's NFL Draft. They are Mario Manningham (WR: Michigan), Anthony Hoke (DE: Cincinnati), Mike Phillips (FS: Pitt), Mike Kokal (QB: Miami University), Antuwan Molden (CB: Western Kentucky), and Dimitrios Makridis (LS: Ohio State). MOlden played football for WGH for three years, but he transfered to Glenville after his senior season to run track. Ted Ginn Sr. did a lot to help him get into school.
