Vote for the Cheap Shot of the Year

At the risk of being accused a homer, Mitch King's play that entire night at Iowa City really infuriated me. I was hoping Troy would fire a fastball at his jewels two downs in a row like in The Longest Yard.

I also don't agree with Crable's hit being in there. It was a penalty and an illegal hit, but I don't think it was "cheap." He was trying to make a play and got there late - that happens dozens of times every Saturday and Sunday.

I agree, he was overzealous sure, but I don't think it was the type of shot where someone was trying to take someone else out of the game.

Once the ball was intercepted McCoy became a defender. If you watch closely you'll see the A&M guy pulled up when the throw was released then came in to finish McCoy after he saw it was picked.

Good call. I've been saying the same thing and getting a lot of grief. If the play is not over he McCoy shouldn't have started to take off his chin strap. The A&M player was going ballistic on the sidelines because he knew it shouldn't have been a penalty.

Of the one's he listed I would have to go with Mitch King.
Some of the others were in the run of play or otherwise defensible - even if you did not like the outcome.
Ripping off someone's helmet and getting extra-curricular right in front of a fellow with a striped shirt (but missing his seeing-eye dog) is a different level of cheap.

What surprises me is that he does not list any of the Miami-FIU Thug-Fest - wouldn't crotch wielding player deserve a nod, a kind of special award?

The hit on McCoy was the worst for me. He was looking at the play, and the defender was already tackled, he's taking off his chinstrap and gets earholed.

The second worst for me was the one on UCLA's Ben Olson, taking out his knees well after he'd thrown th ball.

I agree that Crable's hit was a clear penalty, but not a cheap shot.
