Visiting Charlotte, NC

buckeyegrad

Don't Immanentize the Eschaton
In two weeks I'm going down to Charlotte for a wedding on my wife's side of the family. Well, in reality, we are using the wedding as an excuse to take an extended Labor Day Weekend mini-vacation.

I've never been to the Charlotte area, so keeping in mind that I will be with my wife and eight month old daughter, I was wondering what recommendations there are for places to see in the area.

Mac's on South has fantastic BBQ (or at least it did when I lived there), Mert's on College in the city has great southern food and... I can't find my favorite place on the map for wings... maybe its gone? Any locals know the place that had great wings... hot, jerk, some other great flavors?

This may not be helpful, but I just had a client fly in from Charlotte for a deposition last week. He said he has a yearly pass to some house (yeah, I don't know the name) that he said was the largest estate in America, like visiting a castle out of the movies. Apparently it is a huge deal to them, but hey, you know how every town exaggerates their local sites. Off topic, but I remember every person I met would explain why Columbus or insert-their-hometown was the third on the list to get bombed by the USSR for some local reason. Also, how so many small towns collected money from Homeland Security to protect things like mini-golf courses: it's big to them.

Anyway that's all I've got.

Parents go through Asheville every year on their way to Hilton Head and have visited the Biltmore estate numerous times. I have never been, but hear it is a really neat place to visit.

Biltmore House in Asheville, about an hour and a half out of Charlotte in the mountains. Asheville is a very cool town to visit. If you want to get out of Charlotte and come to the mountains (Asheville or Boone), I can advise, but I don't get to Charlotte much.

Wow, holy crap look at that place. Maybe I'm getting old, but seems like it would be really cool to see.

Also, my client was actually from Asheville but flew in through Charlotte. He also mentioned good golfing and that weather could change 10 degrees in a 30 minute drive-- I guess Asheville is at greater altitude.

I sold books door to door in Charlotte/Belmont in college - but by then I had worked in Laurinburg and Hamlet, so I was already pretty shell shocked, and I remember almost nothing.

They did not pull near as many guns on me in Charlotte - so you've got that going for you - which is nice!

I've been To Washington DC and to Florida but have never visited the states on the eastern seaboard between the two. It's on my to do list. I dated a black girl from Charleston SC when I was younger. I'd love to go there and look her up. We spent the whole summer of '92 together in Anchorage, AK and then she went home for a two week visit. She came back telling me she got engaged but wanted to carry on like nothing happened.
