The decision moves Virginia Tech among the top of its ACC peers in funding, at a time when the Hokies are searching for a new head football coach to replace Brent Pry, who was fired earlier this month.
School president Tim Sands said the decision "unlocks the door to future success."
"We have the opportunity to reset the organization to align with the new realities at the conference and national levels. It's never been clearer that the future of Hokie athletics will depend on the institutional commitments to compete in partnership with our alumni and supporters. Today, we are stepping up to compete, and we ask our loyal fans and generous donors to step forward with us."
The decision will add $47.1 million to the budget in the current fiscal year, bringing the total athletics department budget to $190.1 million. That number would increase to $212.1 million for 2029-30.

I agree. Franklin isn't a bad coach and can recruit well enough to turn them around to a be respectable foe. I mean if he starts slapping Dabo around with his nuts, I'm all for it.

Hokies name Penn State transfer Ethan Grunkemeyer top QB
James Franklin officially named Ethan Grunkemeyer the Virginia Tech starting quarterback Monday as the Hokies prepare to open the season against VMI.The move was widely expected after Grunkemeyer followed Franklin to Virginia Tech from Penn State. Grunkemeyer started the final seven games for the Nittany Lions last season after Drew Allar got hurt, winning his final four games. In 11 total appearances, Grunkemeyer threw for 1,339 yards and eight touchdowns, and he added one TD rushing.
Franklin was fired midway through the season last year at Penn State and ultimately took the Virginia Tech job in November. In discussing Grunkemeyer at his weekly news conference in Blacksburg, Virginia, Franklin said the quarterback had led the QB1 competition over the past few weeks.
"I think he has his teammates' respect. I think there's a level of consistency and maturity.
Just sayin': Virginia Tech went 3-9 last season. Franklin is a good coach and the team should easily get more than double the wins this season than they had last season. However, he's not likely to duplicate Frank Beemer's run of winning double digits 10 times (including 8 consecutive seasons) before his slip into mediocracy. Times have changed; it now takes more NIL money than Virginia is currently spending to compete for championships.
