Verizon iPhone after all?

I'll merge this later, but this is a pretty major source for this (thought to be dead) rumor.

It would also explain why Verizon affiliates are dumping Droids for dirt cheap prices. (moreso than just the incredible and N1 coming)

Two New iPhones Coming; One May Be Aimed at Verizon

MARCH 29, 2010, 5:42 P.M. ET

Apple Inc. is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on a model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless, say people briefed on the matter.
The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The model that has CDMA capability, used by Verizon Wireless, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to start mass producing the CDMA iPhones in September, but it was unclear when Apple might make the model available.

Spokespeople for Apple, Pegatron, Hon Hai and Verizon Wireless, which is majority owned by Verizon Communications Inc., declined to comment.

Gamechanger: Two New iPhones, One for Verizon - iPhone - Gizmodo
That a new iPhone is coming this summer surprises no one—in fact, it's why I haven't replaced my own decrepit phone yet, biding my time 'til June. But this marks the first credible rumor of a Verizon iPhone in a long, long time, if ever, by a major publication.

What's funky, has us a bit skeptical is the timing: "One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to start mass producing the CDMA iPhones in September, but it was unclear when Apple might make the model available." Would Apple, who's always released iPhones during the summer, really release a second model months later, in the fall? It'd be an odd split. And, it wouldn't be the first time the WSJ's gotten specs of a major new Apple product wrong—the same writer's sources said that the iPad would have a front-facing camera that recognized individuals. We all know what happened there: The internet howled, much like it will if there's no Verizon phone.
lso, logically, with LTE coming online in the next couple years, where Verizon will share the same cell technology as AT&T (and the rest of the world), a CDMA model for possibly just one generation of hardware seems somewhat inefficient. That said, if it happened AT&T's churn would set a record for fastest, most gigantic defections ever. Make no mistake: By bringing the iPhone to biggest carrier in the country, suddenly making it available to 90 million new people, the US cellphone market would be turned upside down.

WSJ: Apple 'developing new iPhone,' plus another for Verizon (update: iPhone HD, front-facing camera?) -- Engadget
Update 2: Soon after the news broke, we were informed that the next-generation iPhone would be announced on June 22nd (a Tuesday, naturally) and would be dubbed the iPhone HD (a name that has been tossed around before). That certainly makes sense given that Apple almost certainly has to up the pixel count in order to rival the EVO 4G, HD2 and all of those other high-res handsets, but we're still reserving judgment until we see that fateful media invite hit our inbox.

Update 3: John Gruber's just weighed in with some more tidbits, in his characteristically polite way. Gruber says the next model will have an A4-class SoC, a 960 x 640 display, a front-facing camera, and that iPhone OS 4.0 will enable third-party multitasking. A pretty safe set of predictions, in all, but Gruber's done pretty well in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I need a new iPhone so bad. I have had mine for a little under 2 years now. It has been abused. I will be picking up whatever new phone they make available this summer. Even better if it is HD and looks like those pictures.

Also wanted to ask what makes everyone so sure an iPhone on verizon would not have any of the connections issues like att&t? I dont think it is always the networks fault. For instance, I live VERY close to wrigley field. On game days, its almost 85% that I will have little to no connection with my iPhone, but my wife who has a RAZR on at&t will get full service. This would tell me its more of the software/hardware in the iPhone then the actual network. Thoughts?

well i live in the middle of fucking nowhere.....on 250 acres....im sure verizon and att signals are weak around here.. Nextel/Sprint has been around for a long time up here and work great except for certain valleys etc.....I've been to a nascar race 100k people 5 years ago, no ones phone would work. One year later everyone had a great signal...brought in portable tower and beef up a signal. So i dont know. could be a little bit of both...

Interesting article on what this might mean for Verizon

NEW YORK ? Verizon Wireless would seem to be a big winner after its expected announcement Tuesday that it will start selling the iPhone and break Apple Inc.'s monogamous relationship with AT&T Inc. in the U.S.
But for several reasons, the iPhone's arrival to Verizon would be poorly timed, and Verizon's gains won't be as clearcut.
