Vegas: Ohio State’s national title odds slightly better after Week 1 win at Indiana

The Buckeyes have the second best odds to win the whole enchilada.
With all the Week 1 games now in the books, the focus shifts to Week 2. Going into the second true week of the college football season, the sportsbook Bovada has issued their new odds on who they think will end the season holding the national championship in Atlanta, as well as updated odds on who they think will take home the Heisman Trophy.
Ohio State carries the second best odds for the college football world at 6/1. Last week, the Buckeyes’ odds were 13/2—which simplified down is 6.5/1. If Urban Meyer’s squad can get past the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday, then expect the Buckeyes to have even better odds for the second consecutive week.
Alabama still holds the best odds to win it all, but their odds have become slightly longer. In the last set of Bovada listings on Aug. 31, the Crimson Tide registered a 12/5 chance of winning the title; those odds are now 13/5 after their win against Florida State inside the new Mercedes Benz Stadium—which happens to be the site of the College Football Playoff National Championship this season.
The third best odds belong to USC. Like ‘Bama, the Trojans took a small slide on their national title odds after Week 1, going from 6/1 (Aug.31) to 7/1 (Sept.5). Additionally, quarterback Sam Darnold took a hit to his Heisman odds after the reigning Rose Bowl champions struggled mightily with Western Michigan in their own backyard.
Below are the top 10 teams with the best national championship odds, according to Bovada.
On the Heisman circuit, Darnold was the leader last week with 9/2 odds to take home the trophy. Now, his odds are 6/1, and that makes him second on the list. Defending Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville has slingshotted up the odds table, and has the best odds going into Week 2 at 4/1.
J.T. Barrett slid to eighth on the list, and carries 14/1 odds this week. Sooners’ QB Baker Mayfield has the third best odds at 7/1—maintaining the same odds from last week. A good hypothesis: The winning QB from the Ohio State-Oklahoma contest will more than likely see their Heisman odds move up heading into Week 3.
UCLA Bruins QB Josh Rosen had one of the larger rises of the week after leading the Bruins to a victory against Texas A&M, 45-44, after trailing 44-10 late in the third quarter. Rosen was a 25/1 longshot before the season started, and now has 8/1 odds going into Week 2.
Seminoles’ QB Deondre Francois, who suffered a season-ending knee injury late in the game against the Crimson Tide, had 18/1 odds last week. Now, due to the injury, he is off the board. Additionally, Texas Longhorns QB Shane Buechele is off the board, too. Before the Longhorns’ home loss to unranked Maryland, 51-41, Buechele had 50/1 odds of being a Heisman winner.
