LAKE FOREST, Ill. - There will be no induction ceremony for Nate Vasher — at least for a number of years — but the Bears’ cornerback will be featured in the Pro Football Hall of Fame just the same.
His 108-yard missed field goal return in Sunday’s 17-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers was the longest play in NFL history and earned him a place in the Canton shrine.
“The Hall of Fame called today and would like to have his jersey and a football from it,” Bears Coach Lovie Smith said Monday. “So he’s going to get quite a bit from it.
“He’s just a good football player and that was a great run aided by, well, we had a lot of great blocks on that. Most of our defensive players got a good block on it: Brandon McGowan, Brian Urlacher, Alex Brown.”
Vasher was dubbed “The Interceptor” by Smith last year for intercepting a team-high five passes as a rookie.
Now it’s not out of the question that Vasher could become “The Returner,” especially with punt returner Bobby Wade struggling to hold onto the ball against the 49ers. Smith admitted he’s tempted to get Vasher involved more returning either kicks or punts after watching the spectacular spin move, cut and return up the opposite sideline on the TD return that changed the game’s momentum on the final play of the first half. Vasher had a 71-yard interception return for a TD against San Francisco last year. He has averaged 23.1 yards per his nine career NFL interception returns.
