Vacation Plans in the State Up North

As much as I hate to admit it, my son is going to a camp outside of Fenton, Michigan.

So my much better half and I plan to do some gallivanting in Michigan.

Tentative Plans are to leave Fenton and go to Mackinaw Island for a few days and then to the Upper Peninsula for a few days before returning to Fenton and then back to glorious Central Ohio.

Any suggestions for must see or do on that trip. Hotels, events, activities????

Other than Crust--one of the best bakeries I have ever been to, plans are up in the air. We will do some rafting, hiking, canoeing, fishing. Catch and cook is on the agenda.

I do NOT have plans to do lunch with Brady Hogie by the way.

I've been to Makinac Island twice in my lifetime and enjoyed it both times.
Two things to consider:

1. Are you staying on the island or in Traverse City? Makinac has some nice bed and breakfasts on the island and one massive, very expensive resort. Forking over the money for the resort gets you free golf, breakfast, dinner and access to their spa.

2. There is a historic fort that dates back 150+ years. While the reinactors and histroy is neat, the best part is a restaurant that is open for lunch at the top of the fort. Panoramic views of the whole island and a nice place to spend a couple hours.

It's ok up there but the entire island smells like a combination of horse shit and taffy.

There is a LOT of golf to be played. Play golf, a lot of golf. Also get to the 45 th parallel. There are a few places where you'll see signs for it. It's just a bit south of Gaylord if you're in the area.
