Last night Mrs. Buckeyegrad and I started discussing ideas for our summer vacation this year at the end of July. Travel costs, the purchase of a new vehicle, and purchasing new furniture for our living room have certainly put a crunch on our budget this year and we will probably just end up going down to Virginia or North Carolina for a week...I'm favoring the mountains, she wants the beach.

What are everyone else's plans and have they been effected by the rise in travel costs?

I usually go to Ocean City, MD every summer. Close to home and have been going there since I was a little kid. If you don't want a crowded beach, you could always go to Assateague Island and pay $3-$5 for less crowded beaches....though you will have to keep an eye out for the wild horses lol. I'll actually be in Ocean City this coming weekend for the Maryland State Firemen's Convention.

I've been to Ocean City twice (1998 and 2000). Not a bad suggestion if she continues to insist on going to the beach.

Glad to see I could 'help'. Ocean City is great if you have kids or if it's just you & your wife. Plenty of places to go to dinner to, plenty of bars/clubs, even though the boardwalk is always packed, it's still fun to go to. Hope you can find a place to visit. :oh:

Heading to Columbus with the wife to visit the parents for a week at the end of July. Miraculously, redeemed miles at the "supersaver" rate of 25k per roundtrip for two tickets at a total cost of $20 (taxes), so I'm not affected yet. We'll do something more purely a vacation later in the year, and early indications are that the higher costs of travel may be offset by good hotel deals available thanks to the slumping economy.

I can't think of the name of the place, but is the restaurant with the giant bull statue in front of it still there? I loved that place.

I've always preferred Rehoboth or Dewy Beach, even Bethany to Ocean City, just a little north, and I think a little less (not much) commercialized... used to be one of the best parts of ling in Baltimore, a 2 hr drive to the beach.

Got to stop at Dogfish Head Brewery if up in Rehoboth, good food and great beer....

I know exactly what you're talking about, but I can't think of the name of the place either lol. It's definitely NOT Bull on the Beach.

I've only stayed in Ocean City & Fenwick Island, so I guess I'm just used to OC. If I was to stay somewhere else, I'd think of staying in Dewy. It has the same 'vibe' or 'look' that OC does, except it's extremely smaller.
