Utah - stickin' it to the man!

Saw this coming. Rick Reilly addressed it in his Life of Reilly column this week too.

Rick Reilly: No question, Utah is the national champion - ESPN The Magazine

"This is not how we normally do things in America," says Utah president Michael Young. "In America, quality usually wins, not conspiracy. And there's a reason people usually enter into a conspiracy. It's money. You make money doing it. And those that are in on the conspiracy want to stay in and keep everybody else out."

Frankly though, I don't know why the MWC and WAC elite don't leave and form their own "super conference," and ditch the dregs that are holding them back.

A conference with TCU, BYU, Utah, Fresno, Boise, Hawaii, Air Force, and Colorado St would be taken more seriously. Hell, it'd arguably be better than half the BCS conferences.

do you remeber the old southwest conference? with the merger into the b12, cusa, and arkansas leaving to go to the sec and the smu death penalty. something like that seems reasonable to me..

I'm just waiting for some politician from a state not "jobbed" by the BCS to say something. Til then it's just a stupid trick for cheap political points, hiding behind tough talk meant to fake a principled stand for justice and equality.

I dunno, I think I'd be pissed off too if one of my state universities lost out on potential revenue from sports when other schools were making a killing. On the other hand, no politician worth his salt is going to willingly give away money that's helping out his state schools.

What I'm saying is that this is a cheap vote grab. But it's also legitimately about money.

Outstanding point. I'd take that conference RIGHT NOW over the shit house ACC.

Would be an excellent point if said state University weren't in the position they're in thanks to the $100M facilities facelift paid for by tax payers because the campus was the site of the Winter Olympics.

Would we even be talking about Utah today if they didn't get a $50M stadium rebuild, state of the art training facilities, and all new dorms that were built to the standards of an Olympic village? The city of Salt Lake spent 2B on the Olympics. I assume Utah football directly reaps the benefit of at least 100M of that investment. At least. The Utes enjoy all the benefits of essentially starting over from scratch, with all new modern facilities built after 1998 for every single sport, but without any debt. I wonder how BYU feels about that!?

It would be a better argument if Utah hadn't.. you know... gone to the BCS this past season and .. you know.. made a lot of money.

Likewise, since the NCAA does not crown a champion, the NCAA isn't forclosing Utah from winning a championship. Moreover, it is not the NCAA which establishes who even plays for the championship, thus they are not preventing Utah from playing for the championship. Maybe Utah oughta sue the Associated Press for placing them too low in their poll too.... :roll2:

Ridiculous.

Maybe. Or perhaps by playing more quality opponents week after week, they'd begin to resemble the ACC, lots of solid teams that can beat many squads, but almost no good/great squads.

No, it was the Harris Poll voters who really did the damage here, and Sagarin and Massey and Billingsley were in on the vast conspiracy too!

Damnit Romney! This is all your fault

My heart doesn't ache for them. If I'm not mistaken - the school gets alot of its activities funded by the Church of Latter Day Saints. Fundraising isn't an issue for BYU - certainly not in the state of Utah.
