Utah Attorney General to Sue BCS for Anti-trust Violations

Republican, Mark Shurtleff who has been investigating the BCS
since undefeated Utah was shut out the national championship picture
three seasons ago, told USA TODAY he'll pursue the action in federal court
within the next couple of months and likely will be joined by attorneys
general in at least two other states.

"I think more will get involved," Shurtleff says, "as they have a chance to
look at what we're talking about ? that this isn't about bragging rights, it
isn't some kind of frivolous deal, there are serious antitrust violations that
are harming taxpayer-funded institutions to the tune of hundreds of millions
of dollars. And the right thing to do, regardless of whether teams in your
state benefit, is to go after the antitrust violations ... all the way from the
Sherman Act through price fixing."

Now that Utah will be joining the monopoly, that seems like bad form.

This is so very true. See the part where Utah finally gets in a BCS power conference - and he picks that exact time to litigate in an effort to torpedo BCS power conferences.

Utah is the disliked secular school in overwhelmingly LDS Utah, and the arch rival of BYU. The "good news" of Utah joining the Pac-10 was like a slap in the face of the BYU faithful....which is the entire state's LDS political establishment.

After years of threats, someone is finally going to take the BCS to court. Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff has pledged to file an antitrust suit against the BCS in federal court within the next two months. Naturally, the rhetoric coming out of the hollowed-out volcano that serves as BCS headquarters is that any negative legal consequences would send conferences rushing into the arms of the old bowl, pre-Alliance, pre-Coalition, pre-BCS bowl system.

It's time we called that bluff. Go for it. Run to the old system. A large group of schools may find its embrace far less comforting than they remember...
