IIRC his family runs some type of business up in the sticks where they are from and so is fairly well off(relative trem).
My guess is he knocked up some fat ugly chick in HS, married her as one does in places like he's from, and now realizes that the rest of his life is a long time.
If you've seen her you know that she's going to fight to hold on to whatever she can because her future prospects would be a bit dim to put it mildly.
