USC Trojans (official thread)

Re: I get why Haden made the decision to not hire Coach O due to his cajun voice. It probably wouldn't sound great in the country clubs of SoCal, where USC makes most of their money. However, if you win, your boosters don't give a shit how you sound. You know what Coach O does? He wins. Who gives a shit if he sounds like the Cookie Monster.

I thought he could’ve taken Harvard to the CFP but we will never Know.

To be fair, very few people thought Coach O would succeed at LSU when he was hired, in fact, the hire was almost universally panned. Until he overhauled his offense this season, he wasn't on the best track in Baton Rouge. They deserve all the ridicule in the world for keeping Clay Helton around, but not hiring O four years ago wasn't exactly a folly, at the time.

Meanwhile let’s see what happens next year after Burrow is gone. I’m not ready to anoint O as anything special just yet.

Yeah, they've had QB issues for most of the past decade, and they'll probably also be without OC Brady fairly soon.

If Aranda leaves they'll probably be fine on defense, they've been solid there through different DCs.

They've had QB issues since JaMarcus Russell left. Mettenberger had a pretty good year in 2013 (3082 yp, 22 td, 8 int), but outside of that, QB play has ranged from "game manager" to flat-out awful until this season. In fact, their offenses, as a whole, have been very average this decade:

2010: 29.7 ppg / 341.3 ypg
2011: 35.7 ppg / 355.1 ypg
2012: 29.8 ppg / 374.2 ypg
2013: 35.8 ppg / 453.3 ypg
2014: 27.6 ppg / 387.5 ypg
2015: 30.3 ppg / 437.3 ypg
2016: 28.3 ppg / 423.2 ypg
2017: 27.2 ppg / 411.1 ypg
2018: 32.4 ppg / 402.1 ypg
2019: 47.8 ypg / 554.5 ypg

These days, 30 ppg / 400 ypg is basically a "Mendosa Line" for most FBS offenses. Outside of 2019, they've basically been hanging right around that line this entire decade. Joe Brady comes on and suddenly, they have an elite offense. He won't be there more than another year, if somebody doesn't make him a HC in 2020. Lose him and Burrow, and I could see their offense reverting back to it's recent historical norm, and them slipping back to 9-4/10-3 land.

I don't, and never will, understand them settling for and continuing with Clay Helton.

Yes, outside of the Petey-era, they've been a pretty mediocre program for most of the last 40 years, but USC has the money, location and yes, the prestige to be a consistent powerhouse. They should be able to attract a top coach to turn them around.

I kinda get going with Kiffin back in 2010 because he was a natural fit after Carroll bailed and they were staring down the barrel of significant sanctions. Plus, he recruited well at Tennessee and was still a pretty big name. But to follow him up with Sark, who was barely over .500 at UW then roll over to Helton, a guy nobody thought deserved that job was pure ineptitude.

I applaud their ineptitude.

They went the "michigan man" route. Too much nepotism, including their AD's

USC disassociation with Reggie Bush expected to end as NCAA mandate set to expire, per report

The former Trojans star running back was an all-time great for the program

Former USC running back Reggie Bush has been disassociated from the program since the NCAA brought down massive sanctions on the Trojans in 2010. That appears to be changing in the near future as ESPN reported on Tuesday that USC and Bush are in the stages of finalizing an agreement that will allow one of the best players in program history to begin associating with the program again.

The NCAA determined that Bush's family received extra benefits while he was a student-athlete at USC. Among those benefits were a $600,000 house near San Diego and a $10,000 allowance to furnish the home. Bush had to return his 2005 Heisman Trophy, USC was docked 30 scholarships, and the Trojans was forced to vacate the 2004 national championship as a result of the investigation.

The NCAA's Committee on Infractions adopted a rule in 2017 that any NCAA-mandated disassociation from a school can only last 10 years rather than indefinitely. From there, it is up to the program to decide whether to allow a sanctioned player or coach can return to being part of its efforts either on or off the field, according to CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd.

The NCAA's sanctions against USC were handed down on June 10, 2010, making Thursday 10 years to the day of the initial penalty. USC had tried to reinstate Bush to the program three times since the sanctions were levied, according to the Los Angeles Times via an October 2019 report from the Daily Trojan.

"USC has long said that we would love to have Reggie back around campus but the NCAA has mandated the school permanently disassociate from Reggie," USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said at the time. "If we did so, it would lead to further NCAA penalties. We have tried several times to appeal the permanent disassociation with no luck. We would love to have him back."
