For the third consecutive season, De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), with a 151-game win streak, tops the first ranking. It will be tested early, playing Saturday at Bellevue, Washington's defending Class 3A champions. No. 2 Southlake (Texas) Carroll and No. 3 Independence (Charlotte) feature high-scoring, pass-oriented offenses.

1. De La Salle, Concord, Calif. (13-0)
Returning starters: 3. Opens: Saturday at Bellevue (Wash.) in Seattle's Qwest Stadium.

2. Southlake (Texas) Carroll (15-1)
Returning starters: 11. Next: Friday vs. Coppell.

3. Independence, Charlotte (16-0)
Returning starters: 15. Opens: Friday at East Mecklenburg (Charlotte).

4. Mission Viejo, Calif. (13-1)
Returning starters: 11. In the huddle: QB Mark Sanchez (2,460 passing yards, 29 TDs) benefits from a sizeable line that includes T Kevin Bemoll (6-5, 315 pounds), G Chase Moline (6-1, 255) and T Greg Peat (6-4, 305). Schedule includes No. 1 De La Salle and No. 6 Poly. Opens: Sept. 9 vs. Los Alamitos.


5. Hoover, Ala. (14-1)
Returning starters: 11. In the huddle: QB Jarod Bryant, in a 33-13 season-opening win vs. Daphne, threw for 131 yards. Last season, Mason Duitt (17 TDs) and Cornelius Williams (10 TDs) combined for 27 scores and 1,950 receiving yards. Next: Friday vs. Thompson.

6. Poly, Long Beach, Calif. (11-3)
Returning starters: 11. In the huddle: QB Cruz Parsons (5-11, 180) threw for more than 2,500 yards and 28 TDs, and will look for WR DeSean Jackson (6-0, 175), who caught passes for 850 yards and 11 scores. OL includes two 300-pounders. Opens: Sept. 10 at Centennial (Corona).

7. Evangel Christian, Shreveport, La. (10-4)
Returning starters: 15. In the huddle: Transfer QB Billy Barefield, who totaled 5,052 yards for state champion Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio), will direct the offense. Opens: Saturday at Springdale (Ark.).

8. Colerain, Cincinnati (12-1)
Returning starters: 15. In the huddle: Eight defensive starters, including six of the front seven, return. RB Mister Simpson (6-0, 210) scored 23 TDs as a junior. Opened season with 21-3 win over defending Division I state champion Elder (Cincinnati). Next: Sunday vs. Anderson (Cincinnati).

9. St. Joseph's Prep, Philadelphia (12-0)
Returning starters: 11. In the huddle: DEs Matt Leddy (6-2, 245) and Mike Boyle (6-6, 235) and lineman Charlie Noonan (6-3, 245) lead the three-time Philadelphia Catholic League champions. Opens: Saturday at No. 16 Central Catholic (Pittsburgh) at Pennsylvania Kickoff Classic in Monroeville.

10. Jenks, Okla. (12-2)
Returning starters: 15. In the huddle: QB Andrew Brewer threw for 1,794 yards and 20 TDs. Opens: Friday vs. Bixby.

11. Mainland, Daytona Beach, Fla. (13-1)
Returning starters: 12. In the huddle: QB Jonathan Garner is a four-year starter for the defending Class 5A state champions. Opens: Friday vs. Seabreeze (Daytona Beach).

12. DeMatha, Hyattsville, Md. (12-0)
Returning starters: 10. In the huddle: Offensive line averages 280 pounds. Opens: Saturday at H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.).

13. Carol City, Fla. (14-1)
Returning starters: 10. In the huddle: S Kenny Phillips (6-3, 195) and DE Ricky Jean-Francois (10 sacks) are considered two of the nation's top defensive players. Opens: Friday vs. Jackson (Miami).

14. Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Paul (10-2)
Returning starters: 14. In the huddle: An offense that outscored opponents 430-180 returns nine starters. Opens: Friday vs. St. Thomas Academy (St. Paul).

15. Blue Springs, Mo. (13-0)
Returning starters: 9. In the huddle: In the last four years, coach Kelly Donohoe's teams are 45-5 with two state titles. Opens: Saturday at Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.).

16. Central Catholic, Pittsburgh (13-2)
Returning starters: 12. In the huddle: RB Eugene Jarvis (5-6, 160) rushed for 1,683 yards and 39 TDs. Next: Saturday vs. No. 9 St. Joseph Prep (Philadelphia).

17. Katy, Texas (15-1)
Returning starters: 6. In the huddle: Coach Gary Joseph inherits a program that won last year's Class 5A, Division II state title. RB James Ashton (2,179 yards, 24 TDs) should ease his transition. Beat A&M Consolidated (College Station) 21-17 in its opener. Next: Friday vs. Jersey Village (Houston).

18. Camden County, Kingsland, Ga. (15-0)
Returning starters: 10. In the huddle: Extended regular-season win streak to 37 games, beating perennial power Parkview (Lilburn) 12-10 Aug. 21. Next: Friday at Savannah.

19. Don Bosco Prep, Ramsey, N.J. (11-0)
Returning starters: 10. In the huddle: Sophomore QB Matt Simms is the son of former New York Giant Phil Simms. Opens: Sept. 10 at St. Anthony's (Melville, N.Y.).

20. Denton (Texas) Ryan (14-2)
Returning starters: 14. In the huddle: The Class 4A, Division II state runner-up moves up to 5A in the same district as No. 2 Southlake Carroll. Next: Friday vs. Denton.

21. Christian Brothers, Syracuse, N.Y. (8-1)
Returning starters: 17. In the huddle: QB Greg Paulus (109 career TD passes) is a Duke basketball recruit. Opens: Friday vs. Corcoran (Syracuse).

22. Mullen, Denver (12-1)
Returning starters: 12. In the huddle: RB Maurice Greer (5-11, 195) ran for 155 yards and two TDs in a 32-7 win vs. Bear Creek (Lakewood) 32-7. Next: Friday at Hastings (Minn.).

23. Chaminade-Julienne, Dayton, Ohio (8-3)
Returning starters: 18. In the huddle: RB Javon Ringer (2,422 yards, 26 TDs) will be aided by five returning OL starters. Beat Northmont (Clayton) 39-36 in its opener. Next: Friday at Archbishop Carroll (Dayton).


24. Loyola, Los Angeles (11-3)
Returning starters: 8. In the huddle: A strong running game is paced by RBs Trason Bragg (6-0, 195) and George Hypolite (6-2, 240). Opens: Sept. 10 vs. Regis (Denver).

25. Skyline, Salt Lake City (11-3)
Returning starters: 5. In the huddle: Offense averaging 35 points in two victories. Next: Friday at Highland (Salt Lake City).

I like CJ a lot, but no way are they better than Colerain or some of the other top Div1 schools.

Colerain is ranked no. 8. But I agree that seems too high for Division III CJ.

Maybe Division I Glenville could sneak into the National Top 25 before the end of the year. Big test for them this weekend against Harding.
