Urban Meyer recaps Ohio State’s Week 1 win, looks forward to Oklahoma

One big win down, a second-straight test awaits the Buckeyes on Saturday.
Following the team’s Week 1 victory over Indiana, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media on Labor Day to look forward at this Saturday’s rematch against No. 7 Oklahoma.
Despite a slow start in Bloomington, Ind., the Buckeyes rebounded in the second half and ran away with the game, winning 49-21. For their efforts, quarterback J.T. Barrett won his seventh Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award, sharing it with Penn State’s Saquon Barkley. Also, running back J.K. Dobbins was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week.

- Meyer said that while he was disappointed in certain areas, which isn’t uncommon for the first game, he was pleased with how they tightened up in the second half.
- With 300 yards both passing and rushing, Meyer was pleased with his team’s offensive balance.
- Meyer mentioned that Barrett had a “very good day” against IU, and that many of the issues in the passing game came from poor timing with the WRs. Meyer said “[Barrett’s] a very accurate passer.” The coach added that the team’s goal was to be at 60 percent accuracy on balls thrown down the field.
- The Indiana wide receivers humbled the Ohio State secondary, but playing on Thursday gave them a couple of extra days to recoup, since many of them were on the field for around 90 plays.
- Meyer said that the OSU defense played an inordinate amount of plays, and they might not have been able to win against Indiana had the coaching staff not been able to rotate as many defensive lineman in as they did.
- Meyer noted that Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow threw one of the most accurate balls that he has ever seen, and that the OSU secondary would need to play better against Oklahoma to win.
- Meyer said that running back Mike Weber, who did not play due to injury against Indiana, went full speed in practice on Monday, and will play on Saturday. However, he has yet to determine how the RB rotation would work between Weber and Dobbins against Oklahoma.
- Following the news of Eric Glover-Williams leaving the team over the weekend, Meyer confirmed that it was because of a “school conduct issue.”
- The head coach said that he has a tremendous amount of respect for the Sooners’ personnel.
- Meyer said that it’s not especially difficult to gameplan against a new head coach like Lincoln Riley, because he knows that he will maintain much of what Bob Stoops had established in Norman, including having last year’s coordinators still on staff.
- He added that he had looked into Riley as a potential assistant coach earlier in his career.
- Meyer said that he had spoken with Stoops a number of times since he announced his retirement, and that he was very happy for Stoops.
- Meyer said that he follows the recruiting and eventual careers of players that they don’t take, especially when they are from Ohio. He said that he would love to take an entire team from Ohio, but they also have to take the best players available.
- The head coach also admitted that they had missed on a handful of players over the years.
- Meyer said that when he was recruiting Dobbins out of La Grange, Texas, J.K. “was ready to commit the moment we said hello to him.”
