Urban Meyer talked to the local media Monday afternoon and touched upon a ton of topics in his weekly press conference.

Here are some of the major takeaways.

Routine is a Major Football Factor

The Buckeyes were thrown off in week two by their late Monday night game against Virginia Tech and Meyer says he is very glad to have his squad back into their regular routine this week.

The head man said that his team has to get better in certain areas on the field and the major factor in getting better is getting back to what’s normal for his team.

Preparing for Northern Illinois

Meyer was asked about his thoughts on a very good Northern Illinois program and he wasn’t shy about bringing up that this team is more talented than they get credit for.

When asked what his approach is for his team, Meyer was pretty straightforward in saying that he will get after his team if the undersell the Huskies but ultimately he believes that won’t be the case because when you watch this team on film, It’s evident that they demand your respect as a talented offense and imposing defense.

He believes it will be easy for his players to respect that during game prep this week.

The Biggest Concern

The two things that stuck out to Meyer that definitely need improvement in week three of the season is the play of his offensive line and the perimeter run blocking of his recievers and backs.

Meyer said that the offensive line gets a lot of credit in this program and with that comes a lot of responsibility. He’s confident in coach Warinner’s approach to the slobs though this week and thinks they will be able to get things back in track.

Part of that improvement will need to come at the second level. Meyer discussed how he felt last year’s team was one of the best perimeter blocking offenses that he’s ever been around and was the best in the country a season ago.

That just wasn’t the case against Hawaii.

Competition Against Units

Meyer mentioned several times that his team has to get better in certain areas.

When asked about competition among units, Meyer said he likes to see it across the program but you also have to keep an eye on it to make sure that there isn’t any pointing of fingers from one position group to another.

He also pointed out that noticing the work of other groups is a huge part of success and why he has the coordinators show 5-6 plays to the whole team that were of high level effort.

The QB Battle Continues

Meyer said that both quarterbacks continue to get reps while Cardale is the starting quarterback.

Urban made it clear that J.T. has not done enough to beat him out, but will still have many more opportunities to do that.

He also said that he knows he has two excellent quarterbacks but neither played well on Saturday.

The interesting discussion came with the topic of running the quarterback was brought up by Tim May, who covers the Buckeyes at the Columbus Dispatch.

Meyer said that injuries play a major factor in QB gameplan and why they didn’t rush mush from behind center against Hawaii. Still, he believes the biggest danger injury wise for a quarterback is in the pocket.

Maturing and Not Caring about Others

After the game Saturday, It was clear that Meyer was frustrated with the pressure from the media and fan base on the lack of performance on his offense. He made comments that he had to let things go after the game.

Today, he was asked about where he thought the B1G ten stood in the big picture.

He responded with a solid rant of epic proportions.

The antithesis of the rant? He does not know other team’s schedules or how they did — the fact of the matter is he’s matured over the last two years and realizes the only thing to get caught in is his players, his program and getting them ready to win on Saturday.

He also might of thrown a slight jab at Brett Bielema when saying that he doesn’t understand where coaches find the time to talk about other teams throughout the week.

Quick Hits

  • Meyer said that WR K.J. Hill is sticking out on offense, especially if he gets fully healthy this week.
  • Speaking of health, The Bucks expect true freshman Mike Weber to be available for Saturday’s game. Weber injured his knee in fall camp, but has made a strong recovery after minor surgery. Meyer said he’s a player that he expects to play.
  • D-Line Coach Larry Johnson believes that NIU’s offensive line is the best group his team has seen so far this season.
  • Coach Johnson also touched on the regime of Joey Bosa during his suspension and a big part of keeping him involved was allowing him to practice as normal throughout the week.
  • Johnson also said the days of Bosa playing 85-90 plays a game are gone.
