Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

Eh. You lose a game at Ohio State or Florida and you have to wonder if the season is lost. The Giants might make the playoffs with 10 Ls. A loss in the NFL isn't as stressful as at a CFP contender.

Urban seems wired a certain way though. The fear of losing seems to motivate him. Can’t imagine him being able to become accustomed to it even when it isn’t devastating to their season.

I think this whole situation has disaster written all over it. And he will come back to college coaching pretty quick to get the sour taste out of his mouth.

I just don’t see how Meyer succeeds in the NFL with his schemes, when they started seeming to be outdated his last days at OSU. How many times will he try and run Lawrence? Jags have little talent, and little fan base. They are years off of beating Indy or Tennessee, and Houston has better pieces. For someone with serious health concerns, accepting the Jags position is almost like a death wish if he had such concerns with a top 3 program while at OSU.

That's 100% my thoughts. I know he's competitive and all, but he's got serious health concerns, is now a grandfather (on top of father, husband, etc.), and has a cushy job right now that he is phenomenal at. If he goes to the NFL, I'll root for him like crazy. Hell, I named my dog after him. But this one would just be an absolute head scratcher on so many levels to me.

Can't describe enough how big of a mistake it'd be for him to take any NFL job.

He can't handle losing, he's fairly stubborn with a running QB, and he doesn't have the ability to recruit players.

Every week is a fight in the NFL... There's no Miami of Ohio's or Tulsa's to catch your breath.

He really shouldn't do it.
The Raiders exist.

I hope he surrounds himself with lots of NFL minds to help him be successful.
His personnel decisions at Ohio State— from Withers and the total mess of a secondary in ‘13, promoting Warinner/Beck to lead the offense following Herman’s departure and the disaster on offense in ‘15 and ‘16, to Bill Davis at LB coach and Schiano at DC and the slow trash fire that ignited on defense in ‘17 that raged out of control in ‘18 with the addition of Grinch and Taver Johnson, to keeping Zach Smith around his entire time in Columbus... I’d argue personnel decisions were by far Meyer’s biggest weakness during his time in Columbus.

Obviously there were bright spots... Tom Herman, Chris Ash, and Ryan Day specifically... but man there were a lot of bad decisions in there that literally cost him championships (in ‘15 and the botched OC transition, especially).

I'd love to see him try his hand at NFL, but fear what potential staff he may pick off OSU's current roster. Not sure if coach Mick has any desire to go to NFL, but he'd be one to watch. I could see Meyer wanting Pantoni in some type of an operations role. A lot of our position coaches (Hartline, Mattison, Kevin Wilson) would be ones to watch as well.

While they're both football, the NFL game and college game are much different types of football. I don't think that Urban's system works in the NFL. Of course, if anyone can make it work out of sheer will, Urban is probably the right guy. Seems crazy to me that he doesn't stay at FOX as an analyst and collect a nice paycheck for living a stress-free life. He's wired a lot different than I am though......

As for the assistants, Coombs has had his try in the NFL game and - correct me if I'm wrong - he didn't really enjoy it. I'd be surprised if he left. Beyond that, if I were an NFL owner, I'm not sure I'd want my first-time NFL head coach surrounding himself with a bunch of assistants who have no NFL experience.
