Anyone ever buy an unlocked phone on Ebay and use it? I'm thinking about switching to AT&T and would like to buy some smartphones that are not sold here in the USA.
Good plan? Bad Plan?

Bad plan.... tried that route myself and found reduced battery life and loss of function. Although the phone may work to make calls and send txt, AT+T has a specially configured internet settings preinstalled on the phone which are needed for SMS and Internet functions. You can't install them in another phone (at least don't think so). Long and short of it.... an unlocked phone will be a phone and nothing more. If that's okay with you, then I'd say do it... if you want something more, then I wouldn't.

Damn you!! That's not the answer I want to hear.
Are you pretty good with that kind of stuff and computers?

These People tell me it's easy. Are they wrong?

I'm above average in my computer knowledge... Again, they make it seem really easy on that page, but my experience is that this is only true for PHONE service. For example, I bought an unlocked Razr from eBay, plugged in my SIM card and the phone worked perfectly, but I couldn't access the internet or SMS messaging. According to AT&T, their internet service requires their phones to programmed with their internet browser and with an "unbranded" phone, it wouldn't work... whether this is true or not, who knows. I didn't have the time to spend messing with it or them to get to the bottom of the story.

Hope this helps.

You need to input the browser settings if you buy an unlocked phone. It can be done by calling customer care. Some reps will tell you that your phone is not supported when others will simply help you out. I have used several unlocked phones flawlessly.

Which phone are you looking to purchase?
