North Carolina close to making offer to Davis

North Carolina is expected to soon offer Butch Davis its soon-to-be vacant football job, CBS SportsLine.com has learned.

The offer would come as word in the industry is circulating that Davis has been busy assembling a staff. If he agrees to coach the Tar Heels, Davis could get a contract worth $2.5 million-$3 million per year. Talks are expected to progress Sunday night or Monday, after Davis finishes this week's work for the NFL Network. The former Miami and NFL coach is currently an analyst there.
North Carolina wants to move relatively quickly because of recruiting concerns. That was the idea when John Bunting was fired on Oct. 22 and then agreed to finish the season.
Davis' acceptance of the North Carolina job would loosen things elsewhere. Michigan State is expected to move quickly to determine the level of interest of Steve Mariucci. One source said Mariucci could be offered but that it could be a case of the former Cal and Detroit coach wanting to be "courted." The school wants to make sure Mariucci would accept if he were offered.
The school also is reportedly interested in Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. He was a Spartans defensive line coach under Nick Saban, who reportedly is pushing him.
Also, expect Iowa State's Dan McCarney to be the next major college coach to be let go after a 31-point loss to Kansas. The dean of Big 12 coaches is 3-7, winless in the Big 12. He is 55-83 in 12 years with the Cyclones.
Assuming Davis is off the market and Rutgers' Greg Schiano is true to his word, Miami must look elsewhere if it intends to fire Larry Coker. There are still rumblings that Miami president Donna Shalala is working on luring Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez to be the school's AD and coach.
Alvarez has said previously that he isn't interested in coaching Miami.

TALKIN' BUTCH DAVIS
? North Carolina is the ideal job for Butch Davis. He takes over a team that is 1-9 this season and 41-63 since 1997 with a severe case of the Carolina blues. Davis will turn things around, and it won't take long. That's because the best thing Davis does is recruit, and he has lots of contacts in the South.
? Because it ended so badly with the Browns, it's hard to remember the optimism that he poured into the team in his first two years. In the short term, he could motivate players. The Browns had won five games in the two years before Davis arrived. He took them to 7-9 and 9-7, losing to the Steelers in the playoffs.
? The bottom dropped out for Davis because he and Pete Garcia had one horrible draft after another. He won mostly with players from the Dwight Clark/Chris Palmer regime, along with some older free agents. When it came time to restock the talent, Davis had nothing on the shelves. His best draft might turn out to be his last -- given how Sean Jones and Winslow are playing this season.
? Davis had trouble here because he simply refused to come close to the truth when dealing with some public questions. He had a tendency to think his excellent salesmanship skills meant he could get away with saying almost anything.
? It's still mind-boggling to think Browns owner Randy Lerner paid Davis $12 million over three years when he quit (remember the panic attack?) before he was fired. Davis is now 55 and has spent the last two years doing TV work. He is far more suited for college, where he was 50-21 in six years at Miami before coming to the Browns. His graduation rates were consistently near 60 percent, another reason North Carolina wanted him.
