UFL eyeing overseas expansion in year two or three

By Ben Klayman
CHICAGO, July 1 (Reuters) - Only a few months away from beginning his U.S. football league's inaugural season, the United Football League's commissioner is already talking about overseas expansion.
The UFL, set to begin play in October with four teams competing in seven cities, is eyeing teams in Europe for next year or the year after, Commissioner Michael Huyghue said.
"Foreign expansion for UFL very likely for year two or three," he wrote in a Tuesday post on Twitter, a fast-growing micro-blogging service. "Some fantastic soccer stadiums that would work perfectly."

UFL Draft Yields Some Interesting Names

Overall there were 96 players selected, many of whom made even this hardcore NFL writer reach for an old media guide. However, in a hodgepodge of faceless players drafted there were a few former NFL players who I wouldn?t necessarily call ?future stars? selected.
This fall players like former Bengals RB Chris Perry (selected by Orlando), former Redskins ?big ticket? free agent Safety Adam Archuleta (Las Vegas), former Patriots Super Bowl winning TE Jermaine Wiggins (Las Vegas), former Colts Safety Mike Doss (Orlando), former Jaguars RB LaBrandon Toefield (New York), and former Steelers QB Shane Boyd (San Francisco)?I guess Curtis Enis, Freddie Mitchell and Tim Couch were unavailable?could quite possibly be trying to resurrect their playing careers in the UFL.

Friday?s draft also yielded the names of players with famous relatives like RB John David Washington (Denzel?s son was selected by San Francisco), RB Quincy Wilson (son of former Chicago Bears LB Otis Wilson was selected by Orlando), DB David Lofton (son of Hall of Fame WR James Lofton was selected by New York) and WR Marcus Fitzgerald (brother of Pro Bowl WR Larry Fitzgerald was taken by San Francisco

How the UFL and NFL Can Work Together

When the UFL announced that they would be having there inaugural season this fall, I was excited, very excited.
It's not just because it's more football, but because it offers something a little bit different, something that the XFL and other start-up leagues didn't.
Now, I don't believe that this league will act as a competitor. Not at first anyway. But it will offer a safety net to all those players that fall through the gaps in NFL scouting departments.
There are some players in college who go undrafted, but that doesn't mean that they are bad players. Maybe they just need more time to develop. However after going undrafted, getting signed and then released several times a summer, some drop off the face of the earth, or go over to Europe. But in some scouting circles, it's the same difference.

If this league is structured in such a way as to serve as a minor league for the NFL, it could survive just as AAA baseball co-exists with MLB. If its intent is to compete with the NFL, take a picture because it won't last long.

The United Football League and the American Story

Friday, 3rd of July 2009 at 10:48:09 AM

As we enter the 4th of July weekend I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be an American. I have been thinking about the history of the country and talking to my friends about what makes our country unique. And don?t hate on me too much? my background is in politics so we always have conversations like these.
It made me consider one of the main appeals of the United Football League and, to me, the strongest appeal is that the UFL represents - like America has throughout the history of this country - a chance for a new beginning.
For some that new beginning is actually a second chance.
The UFL offers players a chance at redemption, a second shot at their dream. A player, for example, like J.P. Losman who graduated with so much promise. Enough promise that he was a first round pick and considered a franchise caliber quarterback. For him, if he signs with the league, he has a chance for a new opportunity to show that he has certain natural abilities that may have been misused by the Buffalo Bills.

Upstart United Football League Prepares to Press Play
by Jeff Curts

Hoping to learn from its predecessors' mistakes while carving out a niche amongst football starved fans, the fledgling United Football League (UFL) continues to make progress toward its October debut.
Led by former National Football League (NFL) executive Michael Huyghue, the UFL has been a whirlwind of activity lately, ranging from conducting its first player draft to exploring possible European expansion.
Already, the league has broken ground on a training camp/practice facility in Casa Grande, Ariz., filled out the coaching staffs of former NFL head coaches Dennis Green (San Francisco), Jim Fassel (Las Vegas), Jim Haslett (Orlando) and former defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell (New York), negotiated a television deal with Versus, and broached the subject of Michael Vick being invited to play.
"We are optimistic, on target and continuing to move forward with our plan" stated Commissioner Michael Huyghue in response to a question I posed via Twitter.

If Michael Vick needs a job, the UFL is waiting with open arms

By Mike Penner
8:18 PM PDT, July 5, 2009
Commissioner says the disgraced Atlanta Falcons quarterback could help bring widespread exposure to the league, which is planning to start this fall.

Seeking headlines during this downtime in July before NFL training camps begin, the rumored-to-start-this-fall United Football League says it would welcome Michael Vick this season.

"One of the things that is important in our premiere season is to showcase the quality of talent and the coaches, and to be able to show outstanding players who find themselves in this quagmire the NFL creates," UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said. "Michael Vick might be that kind of player because he is . . . a phenomenal talent, but he needs transitioning back into the NFL."

I know both Mike Doss and Anthony Schlegal are playing in the league, as is Former Michigan and Bengal "stand out" Chris Perry

Hard to believe one of the 10 best backs to come out of CFB this past decade has fallen off that far. :wink2:

UFL Makes an Important Change to Satisfy This Fan
by David Wyatt

The UFL recently released their rule changes for the new season. When I say changes, I of course mean changes from the NFL or the XFL.
I don't want to discuss them in general. There are some that are excellent, some good, some questionable.
However, there is one rule change that delighted me when I saw it.
In my opinion, the NFL is flawed in just one way, that being its overtime: a sudden death, first team to score wins system. In my opinion it's just not fair that a game is decided basically on the flip of a coin. One game lost on behalf of the coin could cost a playoff berth.
I know that some would say that your defence has a fair chance to stop the offence and get the ball back for you. However, if you are an offensive team that clocks victories through offense, then it's hardly fair.

Should the N.F.L. Be Worried About the U.F.L.?

By George Bretherton

Is it Thursday yet?
O.K., maybe it?s a stretch to think that a promotional line like that would help the United Football League be more than just a thorn in the N.F.L.?s side this fall, when the U.F.L. kicks off its ?premiere? season with four teams, a six-game regular season (games played on Thursdays and Fridays) and a national television contract with Versus.
But with an eye on revenue streams, the N.F.L. would be foolish not to pay attention to the development of the U.F.L. With four franchises ? in New York, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Francisco ? and with coaching staffs that include the N.F.L. veterans Ted Cottrell, Jim Fassel, Jim Haslett and Dennis Green, the U.F.L. will have some name recognition.
