Central Florida player dies after offseason conditioning drills

ORLANDO (AP) - A Central Florida player has died after offseason conditioning drills on campus.

Ereck Plancher was a redshirt freshman wide receiver from Naples.

University spokesman Joe Hornstein says Plancher was pronounced dead shortly before noon Tuesday at a hospital. Hornstein says details are still unclear, but Plancher apparently took a knee during conditioning. He became unresponsive and was rushed by ambulance to the hospital.

UCF's spring practices weren't scheduled to start until Wednesday, but Hornstein said 82 players were there for coach-led conditioning. Now all practices are canceled until further notice, Hornstein said.

Autopsy inconclusive on UCF player

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- An autopsy is inconclusive on the death of a Central Florida football player.

The Orange County Medical Examiner's office said Wednesday that more testing will be needed to determined what killed 19-year-old Ereck Plancher. The office says it will take several weeks to complete.

Report: UCF player died after struggling through intense drill

ORLANDO (AP) - Four teammates of a Central Florida football player who died last month say he showed signs of distress before collapsing following an intense workout, a newspaper reported Friday.

Ereck Plancher died March 18, about an hour after taking part in the team's "mat drills." A cause of death has not been determined.

Teammates told the Orlando Sentinel that Plancher's final workout was more intense than what school officials initially described. The players requested anonymity because they feared retribution from coaches.

The four players told the Sentinel that O'Leary singled out Plancher during a team huddle and cursed at him for lack of effort during the final sprint. O'Leary denied cursing at Plancher, but recalled telling people around him, "He's better than that."
