Game Thread UCF Knights at tOSU - Sat, Sep 8, Noon ESPN2

I don't know about the zero running threat other than the QB. Dunn averaged 5.8 per carry and Hyde had 3.9. Maybe not great, but far from bad. To me it seemed to be more of a play calling issue than a player issue. I don't like how much Miller is running the ball right now in the new age triple option that it seems they are running. I really didn't like giving Miller the ball on the first 4th down. The second 4th down call to Hyde was much better. I'm hoping the offense is still a work in progress and will continue to get better as the season goes on.

The defensive struggles are the most alarming right now. They better figure out how to play good physical defense before MSU. I think the talent is there, but they just need to be physical and clean up the mistakes.

If Meyer has shown one difference between JT he is aggressive, for better or worse. It bit us a couple times today on the 4th down and taking the chop block penalty after a sack. Most people would take 7 yards and a down, but Meyer wanted to double down and try to get another sack. Unfortunately it ended with a long pass for a first down.

Not only that but I can seriously see Meyer putting another freshman or two in to see if they can't bring some outside speed (Marcus or Perkins). Dunn has been good but I think he needs more designed runs to him where they're not OPTIONS because as you said Braxton is being forced to take a ton of carries. Everyone thought after game one (including myself) that Hyde did pretty good but for the most part teams are taking away the running back and forcing Braxton to carry the ball.

The play calling is lots of option, power, and a ton of rollout passes into the flats. Once the offense can start going downfield and loosening up the secondary thats when things will really start to be good. The play calling has to dictate for that though also. We have to take a few DESIGNATED shots down field because I for one am happy with Braxton's accuracy and passing. He just hasnt been asked to throw much, just run.

One other player outside of Braxton I thought played well today was Jamal Marcus on special teams. He was basically in on all the tackles, including a couple solo jobs. IMO, we have to find a role for this guy on defense. Too much speed to have him on the sidelines and if Williams is not going to be able to go for much of the year we are going to need another designated rusher (carpenter 2005).

1st, just because I may be critical does not mean I don't love the Buckeyes, I just try to maintain as unbiased an opinion as possible. I believe I am actually harder on them as I expect more from an elite team. That being said;

I do not think I am watching the same qb as you are. I will say Miller is an awesome runner, but he needs quite a bit of work as a qb. Personally I have been surprised at his passing. Meyer had talked him up so much I thought I was going to see a much improved passer, personally I have been underwhelmed.
Yes it works great against UCF etc, but what happens when we play Michigan State and their whole game plan is to make the Buckeyes beat them passing ?

I readily admit that I try to compare us with the likes of Alabama because I feel that is where we need to be, but at the moment I do not believe we are even close to where they are. Obviously it is Meyer's 1st year and I do honestly believe we will get there - but definitely not there yet.
I can understand why Meyer was not too thrilled with this win. Against a stout defense that stops or even really slows Miller's running game, we are going to have a hard time moving the ball. Yes we are down to our 3rd string running back, but we are The Buckeyes....we have a stable of running backs. I want to see our offensive line literally blowing people off the line. They are competent, but not excelling overall.
They are The Ohio State Buckeyes - our measuring stick is not UCF or for now even most of the teams in the B1G, but our measuring stick for now is Alabama. For that, yes it is still early, but we have quite a ways to go. Ask TDTUN how it feels being measured by Alabama.
While I would obviously enjoy as many wins as possible, what I am watching for is the progression of the players, getting better and better in every phase of the game.
Our defense. They did an okay job - but did you feel like you were watching the silver bullets of old ? Our linebackers are young, but they are not yet of the elite status they are capable of producing.
Basically my point - this was a good win, but it was only a small step towards where we need to be. I was not actually that sold on Meyer when he was 1st announced, but watching him from afar, I do believe he is the coach who will get us back to being not just one of the elite teams in the country, but THE elite team in the country.
Yes, I am spoiled due to past success, but winning the B1G , while nice, is not enough and we should have the talent to be fighting for the national Championship every year.
I personally feel the Buckeyes have not received fair criticism from their critics due to the 2 NC games as they tend to forget about our other BCS wins, BUT, being the Buckeyes, NC should be expected.
I live in the heart of SEC country and I also believe most of the SEC teams are overrated and basically just ride the coattails of Alabama and LSU. But Alabama and LSU are the teams I want to be measured against.
I do believe Meyer is the man for the job, but from what I have seen so far this year, he still has a lot of work to do.
I am a fan win or lose, but I try not to only wear my scarlet colored glasses when evaluating what I have seen. It is best to take them off and try to ascertain where we are in relation to the nations elite teams - and we are still 2nd tier at the moment.
Braxton must become a must better passer, hitting the right shoulder, the receivers in stride etc, not just completing the occasional pass. His running is fantastic, but will be stopped against a stout defense. If we are to see the promised land, his feet will only get us there because the defenses are worried about him beating them with his arm - and then he takes off for those amazing runs.
Go back and watch the Alabama- TDTUN game. Pay particular attention to the offensive line. It was every bit as good as could be drawn up on the chalk board. I am not a 'bama fan nor am I a 'bama lover, but I sure do admire and respect them when I watch a game like they played.

And that is where I do believe Meyer will lead us, but let's not put the cart before the horse because we are just pulling in the stadium parking lot - it is going to take another year or 2 and a whole bunch better play then we have seen so far to get on the field with them.

Our defense is good, not great. Yes we had some picks, but we also gave up too many big plays. They really need to do a better job of getting to the qb with a 4 man rush.

I seriously doubt Meyer is sitting in his office right now getting a place ready for the crystal - tho I would bet he is really working hard on getting the personnel in place and getting them to be where they need to be.
I would guess not next year, tho it is very possible, but starting in year 3, we won't really see an angry Buckeye team, but instead will see a Buckeye team confident that it is once again ready to dominate the B1G and put fear into those who dare set foot on the turf......
Go Buckeyes. It's hard and we really do appreciate the work you put into your game, but enjoy it for no more than a day and get back to work as you are wearing the uniform of the most popular team in America (NY Times) and with that privilege we want to once again be the most dominant team in CFB.
Not easy but the payback will be wonderful and last forever.

Who let GUB back in?

Ditto.

Lots of work to do on both sides of the ball. I did not see an "angry" team today. Disappointed in the fans today, too, especially after getting called out. Still, the team is 2-0 and is yet to play to its potential.
Were you at the game? It was pretty loud, especially for playing a team like UCF and not having all the students there yet. It's not gonna be as loud as a Michigan game every week. Kind of hard to get THAT amped up about games like this.

It was the usual mediocre noise level for non-epic games.

I think UCF will end up having a very nice season. Those guys were huge, we played a good team today. They started off 35-0 over Akron before calling off the dogs. Yes, we have a ton of work ahead of us, but we played a very decent football team today.

So him passing with a 75% completion rate isn't improved? And the Heisman is the best player, not the best QB. Was he able to control the game? Was he able to produce? That's what makes a Heisman. He still needs work, but he's making a name for himself.

New offense, somewhat new defense, lots of freshman. No one is realisticaly comparing the to Alabama in terms of playing now, but the potential near the end of the season once everything is figured out is there.

Putting Hankins at end didn't help, although it seems like they did that to stop the run (RB going to the edge) as opposed to stopping the pass rush.

It was loud, but it wasn't USC loud. Not having all the students there yet? So some students have been skipping class for 2.5 weeks?

That being said, my entire section (9c) was quiet. I was literally the only person making noise, and people were looking at me like I was crazy for making noise. It took until the 3rd quarter before some people even started joining me in making noise. I was the only standing, I was the only one cheering, the only time anyone else did something was the O-H-I-O cheer and when Hang On Sloopy was played.

It pissed me off that no one seemed to care. Hell I saw people having conversations not even watching the game.

That's disappointing...they need to get involved with the game more to help the team. There'll be plenty of OSU fans around that would be gladly to take their seats and be way more aggressive.

There were also a few empty seats around me too. Either this was not a sellout, or people decided not to show up. I had the entire row to myself. Behind me, only two people were in that row.

I'm not sure what pissed me off more, the guys having conversations....or the people looking at me for making noise.

I never cussed, all I ever said was, "Come On Buckeyes!" or when we were on defense, I just made a loud, "OOOOOOOOOOOOOO" noise.

And the OOOOO noise is when I got the most looks.

Many student are just able to get Big Ten season ticket packages, including the Block O in the south stands. There are many many more students there once Big Ten play starts.

I lost my voice from yesterday, so I gave my share of effort. In section 10, it seemed like we are on our feet more than half the game. I think 9C looked like one of the most empty sections, and that is a section that students usually occupy during the B1G season. The game was not sold out either. There were a few tickets still left.

Compare this atmosphere to what Florida was like last week when they played Bowling Green. Ohio Stadium wins easily.

View from C deck:
1. It was loud
2. This offensive line gets after folks. Bye Jim Bollman
3. Miller tires to hit a home run too often. Needs to take what is given and stop worrying about the big play.
4. I suspect that Monday with the DBs will be a day of getting your ass chewed out.
5. UCF fans put on a good show. They were loud, polite and backed their team till the end. They especially appreciated when TBDBITL played their fight song and formed UCF.
6. The new sound system really messes up the sound of the band when they're in the stands. Awful!
7. The new scoreboard is dazzling.
8. 12 o'clock kickoffs suck.
9. 104 thousand my ass! A ton of empty seats everywhere. I think a lot of people thought it was going to rain the whole day.
