Basically we’re USA hockey right before Herb Brooks
Yeah, that's a really fair way to put it.
I don't usually go for Taylor Twellmans hysterics but he was mostly hitting the nail on the head last night
There is no urgency at all with this group. Canada wasn't good last night they just wanted it more. Is that sustainable? No, but sometimes you have to meet that intensity straight on... This team wont do that.
We still don't have enough guys or at least enough guys that will go out there and impact the game. I didn't see it at all like it was a "Berhalters guys" lineup. (Unless you think Steffan shouldn't be the #1, which is silly).
Seriously though, are we in a place where Daniel Lovitz should be at left back? Apparently. That's not good. You could put Ream out there but it's just a different problem.
Either way, you should be able to beat Canada with the lineup they ran out there. But then the weird subs happen... First you pull Pulisic for.Arriola... which on its own is whatever it is... But then you put in Zardes.for....Roldan? Leaving Zardes and Sargent both out there to waste touches that aren't near the goal. Baffling
Lima should have been the first sub. I have nothing against Yedlin, and I think he needs to be the guy there long term (assuming Tyler Adams is a DM down the road). But he clearly is either not up to speed on the system or still getting back to full speed from injury. Neither of the outside guys were getting high enough or impacting the wing play the way they needed to.
One last commentary on not enough guys .. for those of you (royal) you who.wanted to see more Josh Sargent. He's not ready for this, and it's not one or two little things. If you watched last night he didn't do the basic work of pressuring the defense until the second half, he's worthless in traffic, and he doesn't know how or when to make a run to get himself free unless it's really poorly defended. Go back and watch Cuba, sure he gets a goal... He also just flat missed two great looks that he doesn't even get on frame, and another time, he gets breathed on in the box on a nice through ball and goes down.
I dunno what else to say, other than maybe it's time to take a page out of Jill Ellis's book and spend a little more energy chasing positive game states because once these losers are down, you can just pack the box and watch pretty unscary crosses come into the box.
