Tyler "Tank" Whaley (official thread)

Whaley book signing Friday
By JIM WALKER/Tribune Sports Editor

Thursday, August 21, 2008

COLUMBUS ? Together again.

The subject matter and the author will join together for a book signing Friday as Tyler Whaley and Ken Gordon visit Bob Linn Sporting Goods fro 3-to-5 p.m.

Gordon, a Columbus Dispatch sports writer, has released a book tracking the career of Whaley, the former Ironton Fighting Tiger and Ohio State Buckeye football player.

?I think Tyler?s story, really, is what makes it good, not anything I did,? said Gordon. ?His long climb to success at Ohio State is compelling reading. I didn?t realize until I spent hours interviewing him just how many obstacles he had faced, how many moments that might have caused others to quit.?

The 150-page paperback book is not in stores yet, but Gordon will have some copies of the book for sale when he conducts two book signings in the area.

Gordon will return for another signing from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, at Waldenbooks in the Ashland, Ky., Town Center Mall.

Whaley signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals but was released two weeks ago and plans to attend the book signing.

Whaley-speaks-combine.jpg

Whaley tells players to focus on future

Sitting at their tables, eating their lunch, the new wave of high school football players had an eagerness in their eyes.

Tyler Whaley understood that look and he made sure that it became more than just a passing expression.

The former All-Ohio lineman for the Ironton Fighting Tigers was the featured guest speaker at last week?s first annual high school football combine sponsored by Tri-State Rehab and Preferred Fitness.

Players attending the combine have aspirations of playing at the next level. Whaley encouraged them to strive to make that dream a reality, much like he did when he was sitting on the other side of the microphone.

?I was told I was ?too short, too slow, we?re not even going to look at you.? Don?t let that discourage you. It starts with this right here. You got out of bed and came here. That?s the first step. But keep working. Set goals for yourself,? said Whaley.
