Two NFL players reporting missing after fishing trip

Can't believe that was almost 16 years ago. I'm getting old.

Yeah, when I saw the ticker on ESPN yesterday, I didn't know the details, but, being its Spring Training time, I immediately thought of the Little Lake Nellie incident... still haunting to think about it.

Hey, at least I didn't say what I was thinking about the Indians thing.

(If Olin doesn't die in '93, Mesa may never be the closer in '97... huh? what? who said that?)

ESPN is reporting that it is indeed the boat.. the survivor is not one of the NFL players, but is one of the other guys who was with them. Good that one is there, but bad that three are still missing. The boat was overturned and the survivor was clinging to it, apparently.

Doesnt look promising for the other 3 boaters. No matter how many lifevests their are, being lost at sea is no joke. The survival rate is minimal. Th effects of the toll are mostly physchological coupled with no fresh water, heat stroke, sunburn, open sores on skin, etc. The waves are the least of your worries in a water survival situation that could last for days and weeks.

My thoughts go out to the family.

Not if you're without a lifejacket. Had the boat stalled, I'm assuming they would have put on their jackets. At least the survivor should have the answers.

Edit: The survivor said the boat was anchored when it flipped over in rough seas.

No radio or transponder. Unbelieveable. They were like 38 miles out in the Gulf on a 21 foot boat. With a radio and gps locator it might have been a different story. Or had they used a coal of rope to tie themselves to the boat, even if it flipped. With even one line across the bottom from port to starboard, they could have tied their belts to it. Hard to hang on for so long in cold water with your hands. You have to let go when you fall asleep or you arms get numb.

A boat carrying two missing National Football League players on a fishing trip capsized as the anchor was being raised in stormy seas, a survivor told the U.S. Coast Guard.

The search for players Marquis Cooper of the Oakland Raiders and free agent Corey Smith, plus a third boater, entered its third day in the Gulf of Mexico near Clearwater, Florida, with authorities saying hypothermia affecting the missing men had become ?a very big concern.?
?Our understanding is that they had the boat anchored and in the process of trying to raise the anchor, the boat flipped, sometime late Saturday afternoon,? Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close said at a televised news conference today.

The Coast Guard was able to refine its search when a fourth member of the fishing party, Nick Schuyler, was found conscious and wearing a life jacket yesterday clinging to the overturned craft about 39 miles (63 kilometers) offshore. He was taken to a Tampa, Florida, hospital.
?The plan right now is to continue to search through the day,? Close said. ?Hypothermia is a very big concern at this point.?

Close said Schuyler was ?very exhausted and somewhat groggy? during his conversation yesterday with the Coast Guard. The survivor told authorities the four men weren?t wearing life jackets when the boat flipped at around 5 p.m. local time on Feb. 28 but immediately swam under the boat and were able to don the vests, Close said.

Well, since tibor75 is history, I guess I'll do the honors.

These idiots were asking for it. As Gator said, lacking the most basic communication devices, going that far out to sea is idiotic, especially since they knew a weather system was coming in.

Sad for the families, but an idiotic move by the fishermen.

Definitely a tragic situation. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families. I read that one of the guys who wasn't found swam down to the boat after it flipped and got three life jackets and a foam pad. He gave the other three the life vests and he took the foam pad. This is a sad story regardless of whether they were NFL players or not. They made some mistakes and probably paid the ultimate price, but to say that they are idiots.....that would be idiotic.

Did anyone else see one of the players wifes being interviewed? She was smiling and kinda laughing, I had to watch it again,,,,, if that was my relative or friend I would drop her white trash off in swamp land

You know, people in stress act pretty strange some times. When I was a bailiff, the times I waited for a jury verdict for a murder or brutal rape were the times that the jury laughed the most during deliberations.

It was a stress relief valve to take their minds off of the horrific facts, I guess. But they (jury) were not uncaring, just unprepared to face the details and looking for a way to handle it.

Yep, I'm always amazed at the press conferences of family members during tragic times.

They seem calm for the most part. They handle questions pretty well. Just an odd thing to watch, considering I can't imagine handling it that way. I'd be upset, emotional, and acting very distant...so I think.

Cooper's dad was pretty serene in his interview. He doesn't appear to have accepted the worst. :(

Yeah, I experienced similar situations overseas. Finding out about buddies getting blown to bits by another IED... We would spend a couple of hours telling funny stories about them..... just trying to stay sane in a stressful situation. Do what you have to to cope.
