saw Bernie. Good movie. My favorite part was the explanation of Texas in the beginning.

No spoilers.

Good list, Muck. Here are three I would add: 1. The critics hated it, but I enjoyed Hyde Park on the Hudson. 2. Life of Pi amazed me with it's ability to stay true to the book and bring the fantastic to life. 3. Moonrise Kingdom. Would love to watch it sometime along with Little Miss Sunshine.

Is that the movie where this guy is about to off himself because of how fucked up the world has become only to see some self-entitled teen bitch on TV which causes him to go out and kill a shitload of assholes?

Pretty sure that this movie doesn't quite fall under "that no one else watched".

As Mili pointed out Life of Pi actually had decent box office numbers ($124M).

I LUVS Moonrise Kingdom and while it didn't have crazy box office numbers it did better than any of Wes Anderson's previous films (which were all awesome).

I have't seen Hyde Park on Hudson yet. I really need to because Bill Murray taking a dump would still be worth watching.

OK, I saw Compliance...will have to look into the others. Were those all made in 2012, or just ones you watched in 2012?

All were movies released in 2012.

That's the one. Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait & one of the better bits of dark satire I've seen in awhile. I've also been a fan of Joel Murray since he played Pete on Dharma & Greg.

Safety Not Guaranteed is available on Netflix instant streaming. Decent flick, not great but fresh.

$310k Four Lions would be a great addition here, but it turns out it was released two years too soon.

Bah, I'm still going to pimp it anyway
It's difficult to imagine a movie this boldly provocative about the underworld of violent jihad, much less one that actually inspires laughter.
The film wisely doesn't try to explore the roots of religious fanaticism and how it can manifest as murder: Instead, it simply accepts the world as it is and focuses on the ridiculous.
easily my favorite lesser known movie I've watched on Netflix streaming.

3 Movies I saw in the theater in 2012:

The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
Skyfall

2013 (so far):
Iron Man 3
Star Trek

You're welcome Hollywood

I've been meaning to watch a couple movies from the original list, but there's only so much time in the day. Unless it's something that I have to see right away I have no problem waiting until the Blu-ray comes out and watching it at home. I can't really think of anything else this year that I'm not willing to wait for.

You had me until Everything Must Go in 2011. That movie was a steaming pile IIRC.

End of Watch brought in $41M at the box office. While not a blockbuster enough people went to see it to push it off my list.

Everything Must Go & Stranger Than Fiction are the only two Will Ferrell movies I actually like. They have a bit of depth & nuance which tends to confuse & frighten fans of his more 'typical' work.

Feel free to replace Everything Must Go on the list with Tucker & Dale vs Evil. It was a struggle to leave it off.

Maybe it's just that I don't get Will Ferrell. The only movies he's been the lead in that I would say I liked were Elf and Anchorman. Old School was probably the best movie, but he was a supporting character. His resume is full of shitty movies.

It sounds like we're mostly on the same page. The reason I like Everything Must Go is because it's not Will Ferrell being WILL FUCKING FERRELL. His relationship with the kid is actually pretty sweet.

I've never been a fan of the over the top jackassery that goes over so well with the LCD crowd. I feel the same about Robin Williams, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler & Jim Carrey. The movies where they worked with restraint were always far more interesting to me (well beside Chris Farley, he didn't live long enough to show he could handle a non-idiotic roll).

Give me more One Hour Photo, Insomnia, The Truman Show, The Majestic, Punch-Drunk Love, Reign Over Me and less of the type of films they are best known for.
