A bank robbery suspect was in custody Friday after a heist at a Munster, Ind., bank led to a chase and a fiery crash in neighboring Lansing, Ill., police said.
The robbery occurred about 11:20 a.m. at the TCF Bank in the 700 block of Ridge Road, Munster police Sgt. Steve Kovacik said. A robber entered the bank, handed a teller a note demanding money and implied that he had a weapon
The teller handed the man cash from a drawer and he fled in a 2001 Ford Escape, Kovacik said. A patrol officer saw the vehicle and chased him down Ridge into Lansing, where the Ford crashed into a garage.
The robber jumped out of the car and ran, then carjacked a woman driving by in a van, Kovacik said. With police in pursuit, he crashed the speeding van into another garage near Wentworth Avenue. The vehicle burst into flames inside the garage and the fire spread to two neighboring structures, Kovacik said.
