ttun basketball (Juwan out, Dusty May in)

This scUM team is currently not nearly as good as their ranking. Needed another mediocre at best power conference team to fall apart down the stretch to win last night against TCU. TCU had lost their season opener to New Orleans (166th in Kenpom)
They're definitely riding the coattails of last season's team, but without Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin, who were terrific. I don't think Lendeborg and Johnson are quite as good as the two bigs they had last year.

I definitely don't think Lendeborg translates to the higher level that well. He will be a ok player but he's not gonna be near the player he was at the lower level. There's a reason he decided not to enter the draft I think the NBA scouts saw the same thing.

Men's college basketball Power Rankings: Michigan leaps to No. 1

Michigan's performance at the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas was perhaps the best Feast Week run we've ever seen. Three wins over potential NCAA tournament teams -- San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga, the last of which looked like a No. 1 candidate before the loss -- by a combined 110 points. The Wolverines rose to No. 1 in nearly every metric, from KenPom to Bart Torvik to the NET.

Some of the stats were simply eye-popping, with this one standing out:

Dusty May has the best defense in the country and a team that's huge, deep, old and can win playing different ways. Entering the second quarter of the regular season, Michigan is the national title favorite -- and No. 1 this week.

Just sayin':

1. scUM is currently 7-0, actually beaten some ranked teams, and are ranked 2nd in the Coaches Poll and 3rd in the AP Poll.

2. May was hired by Michigan in 2024, replacing Juwan Howard.
and
Holtmann was fired on February 14, 2024, and Diebler was named the interim head coach for the Buckeyes. On March 17, Diebler was officially named Ohio State's head men's basketball coach

3. You have to wonder why Ohio State didn't try to hire Dusty May. He was one of the "hot candidates" for a promotion to a "top school" at that time. scUM "chose wisely" and had hit a "grand slam" with that hire. Ohio State promoted from within and might have just gotten "Holtmann 2.0".

Maybe one of the reasons Dusty May went to UM and not OSU was the NIL factor. Coaches prefer to go where the resources are, not where they have to do more with less.

Still think they mailed it and hired Diebler because of the athletic director transition that was going on at the time, they knew they could skate on the success of the football program and not have to make things more difficult than they had to be.

I don't think the transition was really the reason. I think was more a sign that OSU doesn't take hoops as enough of a priority to invest blue-blood type resources. They've got to focus on football and allocate every resource they can to that or else they lose the spot on top. In a world with limited funds, you've got to look out for the cash cow.

Agreed. Protect the cash flow, invest to keep that flowing, and look around to see where to invest the excess to gain the largest returns. That's corporate economics 101. Can certainly apply to college sports, but without that certitude of the returns. Hope that the NIL that went to mens basketball last year, was kept after the Duke and Kentucky xfers left after mediocre years. Guess Diebs has to whip the Buckeyes home in the Dance to achieve a 'raise' in NIL funding. Results begats more $, or somesuch.

Actually some "good news" about a future scUM basketball player:

Michigan men's basketball signee Marcus Moller, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in January 2026, announced on Wednesday that he is cancer free.

"Cancer-free. After consultation with doctors earlier today, I can now say that I am healthy and cancer free. I want to thank everyone who has supported me and helped me throughout this process. My treatment and procedures have gone well, and I've been able to stay positive through it all. Now it's time to move forward and truly get back to doing what I love. The comeback starts now."

Moller had taken a temporary absence from the sport during treatment. He is expected to join the Michigan men's basketball program over the summer.

"We truly look forward to having Marcus with us in Ann Arbor this summer and are beyond excited for his future as a Wolverine," read a message of support from the U-M program when the cancer diagnosis was first shared publicly.

Moller is a 7-foot-3 center who most recently played for Malaga (ESP) Unicaja. A native of Denmark, he has spent time with the Denmark Youth National Teams and was Michigan's first commitment in the 2026 recruiting class. He signed with the Wolverines last November.

"I feel like I'm in a great environment at Michigan," Moller told 247Sports about his decision. "I really connected with the energy, the competitiveness, and the standard that's expected every day. The staff, the players, and the people around the team fit my values and carry a good vibe. It's a place where I feel I match well both on and off the court. I will be surrounded by athletes who play to win and develop."
