Nothing to laugh at here. A TSUN commit is in a coma after being in a plane crash which took the lives of his father and stepmother.

Best wishes for Austin to be able to have a full recovery.

Michigan basketball recruit still in coma from plane crash

Michigan basketball recruit Austin Hatch, critically injured in a plane crash that killed his father and stepmother, will be brought out of the medically induced coma on Monday, his high school coach Dan Kline said Sunday.

Hatch, a junior who plays at Fort Wayne (Ind.) Canterbury, is in a Charlevoix hospital, and Kline said his grandmother, members of his family and many friends are with him.

"Everything's kind of the same," Kline said. "(Sunday's) an important day; this is the 48 hour range and they're trying to keep the stimulation down (on the brain) to see if the swelling goes down. The plan's right now to bring him out of the medicine (Monday.)"

Kline said it's unclear what will happen at that point, but the reports he's getting are "Nothing has really changed, but he's holding his own."

A number of his teammates have gone to visit him, but the area is so full with friends and family that visitors are being limited. "They're optimistic and pulling for him," Kline said. "They said he looks like the same Austin."

Kline is planning to go to the hospital on Monday for a few days.

Michigan offered Hatch, along with a few other players, on the first day that juniors can be offered according the NABC guidelines, and Hatch quickly accepted, becoming part of Michigan's 2013 class.

Michigan coach John Beilein is limited by NCAA rules governing unsigned prospects ? Hatch can't sign his letter-of-intent until the fall of 2012 ? but Beilein is keeping tabs on Hatch's condition through the family.

The tragedy of the situation - Hatch had lost his brother, sister and mother in another private plane crash in 2003, which he and his father survived - has resonated around the world.

When you survive two plane crashes that killed everyone else on board both times, you earn the nickname:

my guess is that he'll still receive all of the benefits of a student-athlete scholarship. i expect that austin will maintain a presence in the program by whatever means that are best for him, his studies, and his program. if the student-athlete scholarship is rendered no longer appropriate, then i'm more than confident that austin will be given a full-ride based on academics and community aid.

unfortunately, hatch has but no choice other than to mature in a week what it takes everyone else at least a decade. my perversely selfish self would attempt to break science in order to find myself in his head and his room this next month.

I think it should be noted that the NCAA is actually ahead of the situation. While they have relaxed the rules on visitation from the coaches, Hatch's doctors have not. They are currently only allowing immediate family visit him to avoid over stimulating him to help speed healing. So as soon as the doctors give the go ahead, the coaching staff should be on standby to pop on over to see him.

I really wish the best for this kid and truly hope he can recover physically and mentally from this horrific situation. To go through this once and remain lucid is one thing. To go through it twice has to be emotionally destructive.

Michigan recruit Austin Hatch's condition 'continues to improve'

Injured Michigan basketball recruit Austin Hatch's family posted another update to his condition Saturday on the CaringBridge Web site, saying the injured player is progressing.
Hatch, a 2013 verbal commitment from Ft. Wayne Canterbury, was seriously injured in a June 24 private pane crash that killed his parents.
The complete update:
"Austin had another good and restful night. The concern regarding brain swelling has subsided and his condition continues to improve. We are encouraged by Austin's response to the excellent medical care he is receiving, a testament to his prior athletic training regimen. We will keep all of you posted with any meaningful changes in his condition. God bless you all."
