Troubleshoot connecting PC to TV

JXC

17-4 since 2001
I am trying to use a male to male VGA connector to connect my PC to my Samsung LCD tv. It just keeps saying no signal when I plug it in. The connector is good, I tried it on a different tv and it worked. I have tried messing around with the display settings on my computer, but still, the TV will not detect any signal. Anybody else have this problem with Samsung TVs, or have a solution to this?

Yep...I have turned the computer off and back on while plugged into TV. And the TV is definitely on the right source...I even humored myself flipping through all the sources, but it's quite clearly labeled. One thing that does happen is if I unplug the vga to the computer, the TV then displays a "check cord" warning. But as soon as I plug in the vga, the display on the TV changes to say, "No signal." So something is happening at least, just a different message though.

Sounds like the computer is running a resolution/refresh rate pair that your TV doesn't support. Try setting the PC to 1280x720 or 1366x768 @ 60Hz before connecting the cable.

Laptop. I am trying to do a dual monitor, although I changed to display to just try and make the TV the only monitor. I also even tried to connect it like a projector. I thought I knew what I was doing, but now I am not so sure.

You haven't mentioned trying a HDMI connection. Is this an option for you? This is what I use and since it also moves the sound, I don't have to sacrifice sound quality by depending on the laptop speakers.

^^^This. My new laptop has an HDMI connection and it automatically connects, adjusts, and set the correct resolution for the TV that I hook up to it.

If you are using a VGA connection, try it on another screen/tv and see if that works. If not, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the driver for the port.

(Also, I am making the assumption that you are connecting to an LCD/LED/Plasma and not an only CRT television)

Yes, it is an LCD tv. Also, I don't have an extra HDMI cord, so I could go buy one, just pissed cuz these stupid cords are expensive. Maybe i'll borrow a roommates and see if the HDMI works.
