Trouble With Windows Media Player

WIthin the last week or so my Media Player has been acting up. I have roadrunner but for some reason every time I try to view something, like videos from the Insiders for example, I get the following message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is not responding. If you entered a URL or path to play the file, verify that it is correct. If you clicked a link to play the file, the link may not be valid.

I know the URL is ok because everyone else can see it. Not sure why the player doesn't recognize my online connection. Anyone out there have any ideas/suggestions?

I'm not sure what your level of computer expertise, but

1. Have you tried updating your media player? Go into help and click check for update.

2. Can you use real player to view it? If so, you can at least isolate it to Media Player. If not see 3.

3. Do you have a firewall set up on your pc? You may have to open up some ports and get into some pretty high tech stuff. Hope that this is not it. However, I would before doing that - turn off your firewall temporarily and try to view it. If you can see it, you know your security just needs to be tweaked.

First, I'm awful with computers. Ask Clarity.

1. I've tried that with no luck.

2. It seems to be only a problem with media player. I can look at things on other sites with Real Player but not Media Player. The videos in particular I want to watch only allow Media Player.

3. I do have a firewall but to my knowledge there have been no settings changed that would only recently not allow me to use Media Player to view videos.

For whatever reason it's acting like I have no internet connection. I just can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for the suggestions though.

BN, I get the exact same shit on my home computer (where I'm only behind a Linxus router and Tiny Personal Firewall), and yet the Media Player on my work computer (which is behind a shitload of switches, routers, and firewalls) has no problems at all. Go figure.

Don't you mean creaming porn? By the way, I made this exact same comment on Bucknuts about a year ago and got banned for a day. What a difference a year makes...

And to think I gave the tech guy who set the firewall up for me very specific instructions on porn and that the fact it had to be at my disposal 24/7. You can't find good help these days.

Off the subject - but this is BY FAR my favorite firewall. It is now called Kerio.

It is free and strong. It doesn't assume anything, you have to tell it everything you want it to do, but, because it asks with every connection, it is easy to figure out the "yes" and "no" answers. Everyone - go for this.

Beats the crap out of Norton, Zone, etc. . ..

Seriously, it sounds like you need to open your ports up within media player or proxy settings perhaps.

You could always try to re-install media player.

Are you running XP? I read a review were supposedly someone had problem running it under XP. Then again, it could've been some nimrod that didn't know what he was talking about. I'm running XP Professional at home...

BN: I'm on RoadRunner, too. Coincidence?
