Trouble Accessing the Website

Has anyone else had issues accessing the site today? I'd been trying to get on since 10am and was only now able to do so. Every other website I tried to access during that time worked fine.

Haven't had any other reports. Are you having the issue with multiple browsers, and what exactly is it doing, timing out or hanging? If it's hanging, check the status bar and see if it tells you what is loading when it gets stuck.

I'd be willing to bet that there was some sort of issue between you and BP. No downtime or server-local network issues today, nor have I experienced any problems from my Time Warner Columbus RR connection. It's not unusual for there to be some sort of routing issue a few hops down the line that temporarily blocks access to a very small portion of the net for a given connection.

You can always hit Start, type "cmd" to access a command line window, and then run "tracert www.buckeyeplanet.com" -- this should give you a pretty good idea of where the problem is between you and there. Not that knowing really helps, because it's always a matter of the problem 'node' unscrewing themselves.

Deety's questions are on point, however. If you continue to have problems, addressing them may help us determine what (if anything) we might do to help. I suspect, as above, that it was just something between you and the server, and if it's gone away then that means it was noticed and fixed at the point of failure.

Not being a 'tech' guy, that's the best I can explain it. There might be better insight in the Computer forum.

--edit--
Nevermind, I see it's a DNS issue. Hope it's resolving itself for those affected.

Not being a tech guy, I have no idea what any of the stuff you said above means. Oh, well. Everything seems to be working fine now. I'm in Washington, DC, have Verizon DSL, and use a Mac with Safari. Don't know if any of that matters or is helpful at all.

It appears to be a DNS (in layman's terms (because that's all I've got) it's how your browser can find the right IP address for a given domain name -- translating buckeyeplanet.com into a numeric IP dedicated to our server) issue related to register.com.

http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

I love that site above, and use it every time BP appears to be down. Tells me pretty quickly whether it's my connection or might be something bigger. The tracert process described above can provide more information in the event there's a problem between you and any given site. When it's a DNS problem like this, it's really just a matter of waiting for the problem to be fixed.

Maybe now that it seems to be resolved for those affected our guys will turn this game around. :(

Looks like Register.com has been under a DDoS (Dedicated Denial of Service) attack for the last day or two, and it's taken down (in part or, at times, in whole) their domain name servers. As Register.com is our registrar and handles our DNS, we're affected. I suspect anyone who doesn't have the DNS cached (tech-types forgive any clumsy misrepresentations here) can't find the site. If you do get through (like sepia) on a given computer, then you should be fine. I think.

All I know is that it's not us, and it's not you -- it's people DDoSing Register.com, and as soon as they (Register.com) deal with it (or it stops) the problems will go away. Sorry to hear that anyone is having problems. :(

Just tell me where to send the cease and desist letter.

This is a good opportunity for people to also contact us through Twitter (planetbuckeye) and/or Facebook (search for 'BuckeyePlanet' and look for the logo). It's another means of finding out what's up when there are problems.
