You kids stay off my lawn!
Orlas King and I graduated from Fairmont High School in 1961. I'd say we were classmates, but Orlas graduated in May while I had to serve some penance for dastardly deeds committed in my junior year and didn't get my diploma until July. He'd been a member of the football team. I was in the band. We were never particularly close, but we recognized each other and gladly met up at reunions.
I went on to Ohio State, but Orly learned the butchering trade. I saw less and less of him as the years went by and when I did see him it was usually at a Buckeye game. The last time we met and talked was on the way out of Paul Brown Stadium in 2002 following the Buckeyes' narrow escape. I did think of how excited he must have been the night the Miami Myth was exposed. Next thing I knew I was reading his obit.
Turns out that Orly had taken his skill in cutting meat into the restaurant biz and made quite a bit of money. Some of that money went into his behind the scenes support of TBDBITL. He turned into Neutron Man along the way, especially enjoying dancing to the band's version of the Pointer Sisters' Neutron Dance.
Compared to Buckeye Man and the guy with the doll on top of an army helmet liner painted out like a buckeye helmet, Orly was content to limit his show to his seats up in B or C deck and to one song. A remembrance appeared recently and I am pleased to share it with BP.
RIP Orly, this 61 Dragon remembers.
