Tressel Will Get Contract Extension

Given twenty years, we will have a very difficult time choosing between him and Woody. If you know how highly I think of Woody, you know what that says about Tressel. He is the right stuff.

Lifetime?

Sorry, can't agree with the lifetime extension, but it will be great to have the second best coach in tOSU history locked up for another 5 years.

I couldn't ever see JT as an NFL coach. He likes his role as father figure and molder of young men. We all know it's too late once the $$ are flashed beyond draft day. This was always his dream job and I still believe it is. Now if we can just avoid him choaking any Clemson players, he'll be fine:tongue2: .

he's not complaing, he's prbbly doing pretty well. What are his bonus' or top 10 finish, top 5 finish, big 10 title, national championships, and bowl game wins/apperance.

You factor in his base salary with all those ontop of it this year minus the national championship im sure the tressel's had a nice christmas.

I'd give him a rasie though with the extension. He's earned it. Until next game that he pisses me off.

1.3 mil includes base, extras, but not bonus

The 1.3 mil includes 420k for radio, tv, pr, etc. and 335k from the Nike deal. I think he can get additional bonuses for academics and if the Buckeyes play in the NC.

Definately underpaid with all he brings to the table, including all of our academic all-americans and graduation rate, which often go overlooked.

Smart move, Mr. Smith.

I like what I hear from Smith ...and am glad Charles Babb did such a thorough piece justifying a major salary boost (and extension) for JT. I too am a Woody-worshipper, but think JT has the 'right stuff' to equal or surpass the great man.

JT is the near-perfect coach for OSU football in the modern era.

Here are a few of his obvious bona fides:

1. He is 100% pure Ohio football -- born and raised to coach Ohio football; no Arizona State, Oklahoma or Utah anywhere in his background.

2. He knows how to win championships -- at the small college or major university level, with his recruits or with someone else's.

3. He recruits well -- parents of high school players trust him to be 'in loco parentis' to their kids; won't get every big-ego kid, but works with the 'right kids'.

4. He's squeaky clean -- been just close enough to scandal, through no fault of his own, to know he must avoid it aggressively for the rest of his career.

5. He loves tOSU -- does not apply for every high-dollar job that opens up, prefers coaching students over pros, sings Carmen Ohio with his kids in the endzone.

6. He's good with the media -- doesn't offend anyone, ever; remains just vague enough to keep himself and tOSU out of trouble.

7. He knows how to beat Michigan -- 'nuff said.

IMHO, that's near-perfect. I can't see how tOSU could have anyone better, short term or long term, than Jim Tressel. Please Mr. S. and Ms H., do the right thing. Make sure Jim Tressel remains the Head Coach of Football at the Ohio State University for a long, long time. He'll win you Championships, you'll rake in revenue and we'll all be happy campers. (He might even even-up our record with Michigan, if you give him the time)

Except all of the uncashed checks found in his pockets after his death

I read somewhere that he used to get checks for giving speeches at small town-hall meetings, or high schools or such. I don't know what the speeches were about - probably the value of a good education or working hard, or "Paying Forward," or something we'd all agree is Woody-esque. And often times, he'd turn around and give the check right back to whoever gave it to him, or he'd just give the check to the local high school to fund their athletics.

I can't remember where I read it, and I don't know how credible the source was, but I can believe that Woody would do something like that, and I think it's pretty neat that he'd do something like that.

But to keep this on topic, I think they should include some clause that says that Tressel will get an automatic 1-year extension every time he beats Michigan.
