I think that one of the great things we hear about Tress is that he treats the
players like they are his own children. They are given a second chance, and
they are looked after and taught social and community values.
On the other hand, the children need to respect that they are a part of the
family, and what they do reflects on the family.
A friend of mine, recently had to set down his child
and say, "Look, you are young and you are your own person, but what you do
drags the family through the mud with you. This is not OK."
My point is that while Tress accepts them as family, and is willing to give
them a second chance, he also needs to teach them that are are
consequences to actions, and just because you are a football player, you
cannot get away with murder
(ok, so OJ is the exception ... but I think he was Petey's #1 guy)
You cannot keep letting them do these things with just a slap on the wrist.
This comes back to the fact that Ohio Players with the Lenix attitude that
it is an honor to represent your state are guys that we want to be here.
The point here is that while Tress is great at giving the kids a second chance,
I think he needs to emphasize to them a little more how their actions reflect
on the family.
I think that while the Smith incident is a "minor" infraction, it is a major black
eye to the family, at a time when the family was under close
scrutiney / attack for this very thing. SO while the technical infraction is
minor, there is a major lack of judgment in terms of being a productive
member of the tOSU family, and there needs to be sincere remorse on Smith's
part when he is back to being a member of this family.
The consequences of the actions are far more reaching than just missing a
Bowl game performance from a player, and the penalty should be more than
just that Smith didn't get to have fun in San Antonio, so that is appropriate
punishment to excuse the loss of a second game.
What should that punishment be ..... hey I just propose the proposition ....
JT needs to answer that question.
I just want to emphasize that we all represent tOSU. And all of our actions
reflect upon the university, and other tOSU members. Some more so than
others. Whith great priviledges comes great responsability.
