Reminds me of a story that happened when I was in the 'Corps...

As part of our T/OE we had an M998 (HMMWV) & an M925 (5-Ton). The two vehicles were located within our compound and we were fully responsible for their preventative maintenance.

Not long after he arrived to the team a young Marine was sent out to lube the chassis on the 5-Ton. Now as some of you old timers might be aware, older vehicles had grease 'nipple fittings located at strategic points of the chassis which mated with the tube of a grease gun and allowed lubricant to be fed into the part.

No one bothered to explain that to the young Marine.

Some time later he returned to the shop covered in grease. When asked what happened he explained that it was a result of lubricating the 5-Ton chassis. Upon further inspection it turned out that he had spent the morning squirting grease into his hand and then rubbing it all over the underside of the vehicle.

That was how one young LCpl picked up his nickname....Greaser.

Great story. I'm not sure about vehicles, but modern aircraft (particularly the one I work on, as seen in my avatar) are equipped with zerk fittings all over the place, from the wings to the gears. Don't have to be an old-timer to have experience with nipples.

I was really focusing on the fact that most posters are going to be civilians and the automotive industry moved to sealed bearings long ago.
