NFL teams have to get their rosters down to 53 guys, and there’s bound to be some Buckeyes overlooked.

Despite not looking great until the second half, the Ohio State Buckeyes won on Thursday night, and there was more than a few glimpses of potential future NFL talent from young players. For now though, 48 former players for the Scarlet and Gray made it through training camp on an NFL team roster — including three guys on IR. Saturday at 4 p.m. marks the deadline for teams to make mass cuts to get down to their final 53-man roster, and some OSU alumni have already been waived.

Several Buckeyes are on the bubble, including journeyman player Doran Grant and young guys like UDFA Cam Johnston and 7th round draft pick Noah Brown hoping to have done enough to make a team. The young guys still have a Plan B if they do get cut, with two years of eligibility extended to the practice squad. Grant on the otherhand has used up his time on the practice squad and will need to make an active roster to keep his job in the league.

League veteran Nick Mangold hasn’t signed with a team since being released by the New York Jets during the spring, and this signing period will be a make or break situation for the extension (or ending) of his NFL career.

Other former Ohio State players who could be looking for a job after this weekend, include Michael Bennett (DT - Jaguars) and Tyvis Powell (S - Colts).

Stay tuned to Land-Grant Holy Land for all the Ohio State-related releases and practice squad signings over the next few days.

  • After being kicked out of training camp for fighting earlier in the month, Reid Fragel was released by the Minnesota Vikings ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline.
  • The New York Giants brought in veteran kicker Mike Nugent at the beginning of August, and despite a much more successful preseason than last year, he didn’t do enough to win the job outright and cut Saturday morning.
  • The first Buckeye to be waived was safety Christian Bryant, who was just signed by the Browns on August 23rd.
