  • Anyone knowledgeable on track spikes...

what do I need to know?
    what do I look for?
    what are the differences?
    best place to buy?

14 yr old.. will be running 100 & 200 .. plus long jump.. slim... decent wheels.. not speed merchant.. narrow heel... practice/meets are virtually every weekday now thru mid May...

I was a sprinter back in high school and used a pair of Mizuno Tokyo's and I loved them. This was back in the mid to late 90's I really don't know what the most popular spikes are now but the biggest advice I can give is to look at the net weight of the shoe and buy as light as possible.

I also advise you try buy spikes that are as tight on your foot as possible and to wear them without socks.

As far as the actual removable spikes themselves you need to adjust the type of spikes you are using based on the track surface.

Usually you'll want to do most of your training in your regular running shoes as these offer a lot more cushion, racing spikes offer none and are soley for running on your toes. On meet days I advise you to warm up in your regular training shoes and only put on your spikes when its very close to actually completing in an event. For me atleast, when my spikes went on it kind of helped transition my mindset to "competetion mode".

Sorry I can't help much but wanted to throw in my two cents.

If your kid is only 14 and not a track star, you really needn't bother with the upper end spikes ($100 plus). As spikes get more expensive, they generally get lighter (and also less durable).

The Nike Zoom Rivals series (around $45) is usually pretty decent.

Also, as something you need to know... be aware of spike lengths. Track spikes are (almost always) interchangeable, but you need to make sure they have the right length spikes (usually 1/4 or 1/8). Having spikes too long will either get your kid hurt or get them DQ'd from races.

As for where to buy... Dick's usually has some, but I'd recommend a runner's specialty store. In Canton we have a Second Sole store where they offer discounts to anyone who is on a school team (not just for shoes, but for apparel as well). Many of the running stores will offer this. It's a win-win situation. They're more knowledgeable than a Dick's salesman, they have more selection, and you can get a discount.
