Track Speed vs Football Speed

ur crazy. Devines not only shows the same speed, but he also shows tackle breaking ability, and with this guy i dont see the same thing. WR seems a better fit depending on his size. Dont get me wrong, they are both outstanding prospects, but there is definetly a diffrence in my mind.
That's not true, Devine is NOT as fast as Rainey. They both run track, and Devine hasn't even broken 11 seconds in the 100m yet, Rainey's fastest so far is around 10.8, Antone Smith is about 10.6, and CJ Spiller around 10.7

Track speed and football speed are very different things. Ted Ginn is clearly not one of the best 100m sprinters... yet we all know how unreal he is with pads on and running on grass.

How can they be different things? You either run fast or you run slow, you don't run a "fast 11.0" nor a "slow 11.0", you run an 11.0. Ginn is amazing because he's shifty and knows exactly when and how to use his shiftiness, kind of like how Miami's Devin Hester isn't the fastest sprinter(10.8 or so) but is their biggest playmaker(especailly on ST) because he's so shifty.

Ted Ginn was a excellent track runner. 46.6 in the 400M and 13.6 in the 110 hurdles. I am positive that he was a low 10 in the 100M. Devine is not fast. His speed does not match the hype. 11.4 in the 100M and 23.6 in the 200M does not look like break away speed to me. How can you talk about Rainey not being a D1 candidate and he is much bigger then Devine and played against much better competition. Devine is 5'7" or 5'8" 165 lbs. Rainey also from florida and Stephens from Texas are much bigger and better 2007 prospects. They are both faster, bigger 5'11" and have great moves. Devine has good moves but is not close to Rainey or Stephens when it comes to the measurables.

The point is that there are players on OSU's team that run faster than Ginn when they get on a track. That's because they are racing on a rubber track with track spikes and nothing but a tight track suit slowing them down. Football pads, grass, a helmet are all big differences... plus the fact that very rarely do you get to utilize your speed for more than 5-10 yards... it's your agility and quick burst that matter the most.

I don't disagree with your comment about rainey's speed, I'm just saying that it is possible for one to be faster or just as fast even if his track speed is slower.

Whoa....what the heck, did a mod move this part of the thread because it got a bit off topic? Took me some time just to find it again, lol.

UM guy, I know how important things such as explosiveness is, but explosiveness doesn't equal to speed. Some guy was making the comment that Devine's speed is what elevates him over Rainey, I'm simply refuting his argument. I think both are extremely explosive, but keep in mind that Devine's district is VERY poor and the competition is fairly easy. Devine gets stuffed routinely against good competition. See how he seems to have big play after big play? He actually averages LESS yards per carry than Rainey does, and it can be contributed to the games where he does play against good competition. In thos games, he get about 4-6 ypc, and those games lower his overall ypc to a point below Rainey's. BTW, I think Rainey's fastest 100m time this season is 10.82, and the fastest 200m time is 22.08, not quite as good as Stephens' but pretty close. They're both getting better too.

Yeah I just got done with an aggravating day, so I was a little quick to argue. I really don't disagree with you much at all, I just was in a bit of an argumentative mood :)

They split it off because it wasn't really relevant to the topic, which is true.

Eventually there gonna implement a system to have a news only thread, and then also have a news + comments thread like we have now. Then they won't have to move the "useless" arguments like ours elsewhere.
