Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, Sat 11/21, 3:30pm ET, ABC

[Mark May] said that he expects a close, low scoring game. Has he watched the Sparty D this year?

I see Urban standing on the sideline before the first series looking into the eyes of some guys ready to play to their potential, and he conjures his inner General Maximus and says, "On my signal, unleash hell."

The way Cook looked Sat, there's no way his shoulder is going to be 100%, and Bosa should knock him out early. I wouldn't be surprised if MSU has had that more athletic QB practicing this week to hit the OSU D with some option and QB run. Cook throwing the ball to open up the run was Sparty's only path to victory. If Cook goes down or isn't effective, this will get very ugly.

If it's all that bad, I don't know how Dantonio, in good conscience can play him, let alone start. I wouldn't want to be responsible for ending a promising career. JMO.

I don't know. The guy could be feeling the best he has all season.

I think he hurt his shoulder by getting his arm hit as he threw, not when he hit the ground because he really didn't land on the right shoulder. You get all kinds of muscle and soft tissue damage when your arm is going forward forcibly and then gets stopped. So I would guess he is icing, getting US and electric stim, taking some meds, etc., but he was in some serious pain afterward, and even if he heals fast, there will be some loss of strength and soreness. But playing him with it won't be putting his career at risk assuming this isn't a joint problem. If his passes don't have zip on them, we will know he isn't 100%. And if that happens, it will be interesting to see what Plan B is.

Yeah, all food for thought. I know that Urban leaves decisions like that to the med staff. Wait and watch.

Yeah, Stewart Mandel is a total douche bag; however, he is basically correct in that it is now time for Ohio State to step up and play like "champs".

Forward Pass: Time for Ohio State to play like champs or miss playoff

Ohio State won 28-3 at Illinois on Saturday to improve to 10-0. Afterward, Urban Meyer and his players … answered another week of questions about the Buckeyes’ lackluster passing game. Meyer lamented poor pass protection. Quarterback J.T. Barrett criticized his own performance.

Such is life when you’re the defending national champions. Ohio State’s first 10 games have felt like one extra-long preseason — working out the kinks against overmatched opponents, facing scrutiny over every little misstep.

Finally, starting Saturday, style points become irrelevant. AP No. 9 Michigan State (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) comes to Columbus in what is essentially a Big Ten quarterfinal matchup. Win that and advance to the semifinal where OSU plays at No. 14 Michigan (8-2, 5-1). Win that and advance to the final, most likely against No. 6 Iowa (10-0, 6-0) in the Big Ten championship game.

"You don't have to be your best now, you don't have to be your best when there's two games left in the season," Barrett said Saturday. "You want to be at your best at the end of the year."

Be careful, J.T. If the Buckeyes aren’t at their best the next two weeks they’ll be somewhere far less glamorous than the playoff at the end of the year.

Ten games in, Ohio State has for the most part developed into the team we expected. Building on his monstrous postseason performances of a year ago, Ezekiel Elliot has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game and is the nation’s sixth-leading rusher (142.5 yards per game). He carried 27 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns against the 5-5 Illini.

And the Buckeyes’ star-studded defense of Joey Bosa, Darron Lee, Vonn Bell,Adolphus Washington, et al., has been dominant nearly every week, holding four straight opponents to 14 points or less. They rank fifth nationally in yards per play allowed (4.32).

The one concern, crazily enough, is the position where Ohio State is ostensibly loaded — quarterback. In his first start back after a week’s suspension for his drunk driving arrest, Barrett was a modest 15 of 23 for 150 yards, a touchdown and an interception against Illinois while also rushing 16 times for 74 yards and a score. Behind Barrett and former starter Cardale Jones, the Buckeyes rank just 34th in the country in pass efficiency — one spot behind option team Navy.

“[Rushing] is our strength, that's where we're most consistent," Meyer said Saturday. "But we also know, to win the big one, you need to be balanced. And we're not quite there yet."

The Buckeyes themselves seem to share the same sentiment as committee chairman Jeff Long, who said after last week’s rankings his group believes Ohio State is “a team that hasn't played their best yet. We think that their best games are in front of them.”

Based on what I saw, I think Cook could be somewhere between out and limited by Saturday. Maybe the doctors don't know yet either. Regardless, I'm sure Fickell and Ash are thinking about what Sparty's Plan B might be. Whatever it is, it is probably not as good as Cook's Plan A.

You think this is just a smoke screen?

On a conference call Monday, Cook said, “the shoulder is great. Feels good.” He declined to comment if he’s been able to throw so far this week or if he has had X-rays, however.

Just sayin': Conner Cook is a highly rated NFL QB prospect. A shoulder injury isn't something to "mess around with" especially on a QB's throwing shoulder, etc. A further aggravation of the injury (i.e. playing before fully healed) could easily cost him millions in the NFL draft and/or an NFL career. Just ask Braxton Miller about shoulder injuries.
