Presser Bullets: Ryan Day Says Julian Sayin Is Out Indefinitely, Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair Will Compete During Bye Week
Ryan Day
- Announced that Julian Sayin is out "indefinitely." While Day didn’t want to set a timeline for his return, he said Ohio State is putting a plan together for Sayin not to be ready for the rest of the season as well as the postseason.
- On Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair: "Luke’s been ahead of Tavien in terms of what we’ve seen, but now that we have a bye week, these guys are both gonna get a lot of reps, and we’re gonna start to put together a plan on how we’re gonna move forward. We’re gonna play the guy that gives us the best chance to win.”
- Said everyone across the board needs to step up and do their part with Sayin out.
- On Fahey: "He's an extremely hard worker. He puts in a lot of hours. He's extremely competitive. He has a moxie about him." He thought Fahey was a "little overwhelmed and drinking through a fire hose" against Indiana.
- Day said he’ll make the final decision on who Ohio State’s starting quarterback will be next week, but Arthur Smith and Billy Fessler will also have input.
- Day said he turned in several pass interference penalties that should have been called against Jeremiah Smith and that the Big Ten admitted there were some missed calls in Saturday’s game. “Quite honestly, there was accountability taken. But sometimes you feel like it's a day late and a dollar short.”
Matt Patricia
- Said Jay Timmons has done an "unbelievable job since he got here."
- Called it a "week-by-week" approach when identifying how aggressive they’re going on defense.
- On the improved run defense: "These guys have done a great job of really improving the fundamentals and the techniques. Obviously we didn't do great a couple of weeks ago, and we take a lot of pride in making sure that we can stop the run."
- Said it "hasn't been easy" for Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Devin Sanchez to guard the wide receivers they've had to face.
- Called USC a "huge challenge" in the passing game.
- When asked about Julian Sayin's injury and the defense needing to step up and win games because of it, he said it takes all three phases to win a game, but knows regardless, the defense needs to step up both schematically, individually and as a team.
Arthur Smith
- Called Julian Sayin's injury "an unfortunate part of the game," but the "expectations don't change."
- Said Ohio State has to "play to the strengths of our offense" and will "lean into the strength of the team."
- Said the Buckeyes may change parts of their offense with Sayin out, but he doesn't know yet.
- Didn't comment on the timeline for Ja'Kobi Jackson and Austin Siereveld to return.
- When asked who he believes his two best tackles are, he didn't directly answer and said he believes the offensive line has seven quality starters, including Jake Cook.
- Said he's not asking Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair to "be Julian."
- On Luke Fahey: "He has a pro mindset. I mean, from the jump, it's been impressive about him. I know he wasn't a highly recruited guy, but he understands how to play the position."
- On Tavien St. Clair: "He's got a big arm. Another guy that can extend plays and is a big person in the pocket."
- Called Fahey and St. Clair "different players" as far as to what they bring to the offense.
- Said there's a "human side" to watching Sayin go down, and he feels for him, but he knows he still has to do his job and prepare the next guy to make sure the offense is ready.
