BUTLER UNIVERSITY - Official Site of Butler Athletics - In what will probably be Ohio State's first reasonable test this year, the Butler Bulldogs come in off a disappointing 13-15 season. Remember now, just two seasons prior, this team was in the Sweet Sixteen and getting used to the idea of winning 20+ games every year. Matta's successor, Todd Lickliter, is a proven entity on the sidelines, going 82-41 in his four seasons as head coach, so we know this team can win. Combine that leadership with the fact that the 'dogs have all five end-of-the-year starters coming back, and that #245 RPI ranking may turn out to be a funny little joke. In the backcourt, we'll likely see the two Senior guards - #3 Bruce Horan, and #21 Avery Sheets. Horan is the resident long-ball specialist, though he's not the only one with a penchant for launching threes. To put it in perspective, Horan had more three point attempts last year than Tony Stockman. Yes, crazy, I know. But let's move on. The 6-3, 195 lb. guard played in all 28 games for Butler, starting 22, and put up solid numbers (9.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg, and a .410 3PT%). Avery Sheets (6-0, 175) started 27 games, and led the team in assists (4.0 apg). Moving to the frontcourt, we've got #20, Senior forward Brandon Polk (6-6, 205) and #33, Junior guard-forward Brandon Crone (6-6, 230). Both guys played in all 28 games, starting 17 and 22 respectively. Polk is the muscle on this roster, even at a trim 205 pounds. Along with leading the team in scoring (13.6 ppg), he led in rebounds (4.6 rpg) and posted 23 blocked shots (as many as the next three guys combined), and oh - he also shot 58.9% from the field. Crone is no slouch himself, having averaged 7.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg and even drilling 22 of his 57 3PT attempts. The Bulldogs had a seven foot white boy standing in the middle - Jamie "Not-so" Smalligan - but the big ox requested a release to transfer after last year, and got his wish. So, the five, as far as I know, is a bit of a question mark this year. It will likely be #24, Junior forward-center Brian Ligon (6-7, 245), who, if he can stay healthy, should be serviceable. If this team has an X-factor, it's #4, Sophomore guard A.J. Graves (6-1, 160). The reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year (not that that's a title you can really defend) was second on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and is one hell of a free throw shooter (68-74, 91.9%). About half of the kid's shots were from behind the arc, so between him, Horan and Sheets, we're going to have to keep a sharp eye on the perimeter. Now, I've been talking them up pretty nice-like, but this team did have a losing record last year. My main concern is this Graves kid blowing up and dropping 30 on us, but I'm confident that we will have game-planned for that. If nothing else, we can cling to the 178 team gap between us and them in the RPI - put simply, it's a game we definitely should win.

My prediction: tOSU 77 - BU 68

Up next, Virginia Tech...

haha, thanks man. While i agree with everything you said your score prediction might be too high. Butler has a tendency to like to hold the ball for all 35 seconds of the shot clock before they shoot it so i would expect the score to be a little lower then that unless ohio state can get their fast paced tempo that matta likes to play going.

Keep up the good work, your making my long boring wednesday much more enjoyable.!

Mucho gracias for doing this VR.

Thought I would try to make some contribution by researching Butler's recruits via the Scout DB to see if they had landed anyone of note.

The 'big name' is the above mentioned Polk - a 2004 four star JC from Redlands CC who passed on offers from Colorado and Western Ky to play for Butler.

Their only other recruit rated over 2 stars was Nick Brooks. He was a 3 star rated the #24 SF in 2003 and turned down an offer from Ball St. Brooks started 12 games last season and averaged just under 6 points.

Butler, my second favorite team. Can't wait to watch them play OSU. I wish it was at Hinkle Fieldhouse though, I love that place. I make it out to atleast 3-4 games every year and my mom usually goes to more.

Last year was pretty disappointing but they lost a lot from the SweetSixteen squad that took Louisville on pretty well. They've always had great perimeter shooters (Remember Darnell Archie from a few years back? My favorite Bulldog, could shoot the lights out, and holds the Consecutive Free Throws Made record.) A.J. Graves is the younger brother to Andrew Graves and Matthwew Graves who both played for the Bulldogs in the late 90's and could shoot the lights out as well. They play big teams well and are always a threat. They took Mike Miller's Florida team down to the wire in the Tournament about 4 seasons ago. They also played at Duke a few seasons ago, was a nice test for them and only lost by I think around 10-15. So I doubt this team will be too indimidated to play Ohio State.

I don't think they hang with OSU though. It'll be exciting, one just to get the season underway, and two because for me, it's a fun matchup. I want to see OSU on the court so badly. It's been a great off-season, and yea it's still the heart of football season, but this is such an exciting time for OSU Basketball.

Bucks cruise to a 15 point victory.

You know, you're right about that tempo thing. I noticed they took something like 400 fewer shots than we did over the course of the season, ditto their opponents. It'll be interesting to see how we play that.

Butler opponents only reached the 70s six times last season and the 80s once (don't know if any of those were OT). But they didn't play anyone out of the Big Ten last season.

This will be OSUs 4th game. If Matta's emphasis on rebounding and D bares fruit they should be getting up and down the court.

I may set up a vBet on this one in regards to whether OSU breaks 75. I would go with the over.

He was a pretty good player but he transfered out last year to some small indiana or illinois school I believe. He never really got a long with coach licklitter which is a shame because he was a good big talent that we never really seemed to take advantage of.

Well i think this game is definitely going to be different from the chicago state game. That game was a game of two teams wanting to run with similar styles but one team, ohio state, being far more athletic and better basketball players. Butler likes to use the clock in each possesion so don't be surprised if they do a lot of weaving out top and motion offense to try and find and open three. The Sheets likes to take it to the hoop too and either make the difficult lay up or kick it out for an open three so Ohio state will have to be careful for that. Polk is a beast inside....for the horizon league, he is very quick and athletic and has a decent shot but he is aour center and i believe he is only 6'6 so dials will definitely have the size and height advantage over him. They play pretty tough defense on the perimeter but i don't see how Butler could stop dials and even jj downlow if Ohio State just looks for it. Butler doesn't have the athletes or the strength to match up with them.

I think the game will come down to whose style wins out. If its a run and shot type game with a lot of possesions and shooting then i think Ohio State wins this one easily. If you thought Ohio state was thin on the bench, Butler is kate moss thin. They only have 9 scholarship players eligible to play this season and one of them is hurt and the other is a freshmen would be walk on. So if it is a running game Butler will have a lot of trouble. If this game is a three point shooting contest and the shot clock gets down below the teens in eahc possesion then i think Bulter would have a decent chanc of pulling out the upset. But For the reason i stated before with the lack of athletes, size, and depth Ohio State should prevail with the victory.

Prediction
OSU 73
Butler 57
