tOSU vs. Ashland University (Unofficial Game Preview)

Some very nice runs today. I am very happy with our guard play whoever is out there. No shortage of folks who can score. Nice to see them hit the 100 mark - worth hanging around for.

But we have serious problems up front. Offensivley Dials is stellar. But he has drawn 9 fouls in two games against Division II schools without playing good D (official site shows he only played 12 minutes today - which doesn't sound right - but he it wasn't a whole lot more). Terwilliger is not there yet and has drawn 7 fouls himself. Harris plays unbelievably soft. He was blocked at least three times on shots under the basket. I did not see any strong moves from him at all. Sullinger is playing strong but he is 6-5 for nuts sake. Sylvester helps but is only part of the answer.

This was my biggest concern coming into the season and it has increased each of the first two games.

But we have serious problems up front.

This is our biggest weakness and Matta will protect Dials on defense. He will be fine, remember its just an exhibition and Dials did a great job of staying on the floor last year, I am worried but I believe we will be fine.

Ohio State found itself in a battle with Division II Ashland midway through the first half of Sunday’s final exhibition tune-up.

Ashland led OSU 17-15 with 10 minutes left in the first half. But the Buckeyes exploded by outscoring the Eagles 38-14 over the remainder of the half. That spurt helped OSU go on and take a 100-67 win before 6,166 at Value City Arena.

“We don’t want to be a team that needs something exciting to happen so we can play sound or play with toughness,” said OSU coach Thad Matta. “But that is part of being in early November and continuing to build. Some guys may not be tying their defense to their offense.”

Ronald Lewis came off the bench to lead OSU with 18 points and five rebounds. Lewis was part of OSU’s late first-half rising.

“We picked up our pressure,” said Lewis, who was 8 of 13 from the floor. “We let them do whatever they wanted to do. But then we picked up the pressure. We got in the passing lanes and started to D up. Hopefully that will happen from the start (from now on).”

Terence Dials added 12 points, but fouled out in just 12 minutes. Ivan Harris chipped in 10 points.

All 10 of OSU’s scholarship players scored eight points or more in the win.

“That is something we have to do,” Matta said. “We need everybody involved. Terence only getting four shots, we probably need to get him more shots. But he also has to do a better job of staying out of foul trouble. He had some fouls on the rebound and, as a senior, he has to know he can’t have those.”

Jamar Butler, J.J. Sullinger, Je’Kel Foster and Matt Sylvester all had nine points for OSU. Sullinger added 11 rebounds for the Buckeyes, while Butler had eight assists.

Brayden Bell, Sylvester Mayes and Matt Terwilliger each had eight points.
For the game, OSU hit 55.2 percent of its shots from the floor (37 of 67) and was 41.7 percent (10 of 24) on three-point attempts.

Vahn Knight led Ashland with 15 points, while Greg Emmons had 13 points and Justin Brown had 11.

“Certainly, they are a deep team,” Ashland coach Roger Lyons said of OSU. “They are big and deep and well coached. When they need a basket, they know exactly where to go with the ball. I see nothing but good things for them. They’ve got speed, got size and they’re well coached. When you have those things, you have a chance to win games on any level.”

Ashland led 17-15 with 11:53 left in the first half after Emmons hit a three-pointer. OSU started its big run with eight straight points, including a three-point play by Lewis and a three-pointer by Sylvester.

Matta called a timeout with 8:33 left in the half after Knight snagged a loose ball and scored amid a crowd of Buckeyes.

“I didn’t think the loose ball – even if you don’t get it – you don’t let the guy pick it up and shoot an open shot,” Matta said. “That was a lack of aggressiveness you don’t want to see. I know we’re not going to play perfect, but I think we can play hard.”

Shortly thereafter, OSU reeled off 13 straight points, including a Lewis layup off a Butler steal, a Lewis jam off another Butler steal, a Harris three-pointer and a Lewis layup off his own steal, to push the lead to 38-24 with 3:36 left in the half.

Butler then hit three threes in the final 2:51 of the half as OSU built its halftime lead to 53-31.

“He gave us a spark off the bench,” Lewis said of Butler. “He started us and everybody followed along. If you see one person do it, everybody wants to do it.”

OSU kept the hammer down with a 19-6 run to start the second half. Lewis keyed this run with eight points, including an alley oop from Mayes and a wicked baseline jam. OSU led 72-37 with 12:50 left.

A Bell three-pointer pushed the lead to 38 at 81-43 with 9:29 left. Foster made a three-pointer for a 39-point lead at 84-45 with 7:19 left.
Mayes made a back door layup off a Butler feed with 9.7 seconds left as OSU hit the century mark.

Also Notable
* For the second exhibition game, Dials, Sylvester, Foster and Sullinger were again starters. But Mayes replaced Lewis in the lineup.

“Ron wasn’t sure he was going to play today,” Matta said. “He jammed his toe Friday in practice. (Trainer) Vinnie (O’Brien) did a great job getting him back healed. I told him we would see how he felt today and if he can go he can go and if not don’t worry about it. We probably would have started Ron had he not been injured.”

* It was reported on Saturday that Butler and Terwilliger will miss next Sunday’s regular season opener as a penalty for playing in a sanctioned three-on-three charity basketball tournament.

“The rules are the rules,” Matta said. “It is funny getting on kids for playing basketball. But this is one of those deals where it was a mistake. We need to learn from our mistake and hopefully that never happens again.”

Matta was asked how that would affect the Buckeyes, who would only have eight scholarship players available.

“We’re down two guys,” he said. “In year six (as a head coach), I have dealt with a lot of different hands. It is what it is, as the players say, so we just go.”

* The Buckeyes open the regular season next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Chicago State. Because of NFL obligations on WBNS-TV (Ch. 10), the game will be televised by Ohio News Network.

Matta discussed areas of concern as the Buckeyes point toward their opener.

“Post defense and rebounding will be paramount this week,” Matta said. “Those were two things I didn’t think we did that well at times today. We will be honing in our offensive execution. We need to continue to build our conditioning base.”

Men's Basketball
Buckeyes Reach Century Mark Against Ashland
By John Porentas
The Buckeyes got off to ragged start but heated up with a spark from Jamar Butler to defeat Ashland College 100-67 in OSU's final exhibition game of the season.
The Eagles trailed by just one at 25-24 with 5:46 remaining in the first half, but fueled by a stellar defensive effort by Butler, the Buckeyes closed out the half by scoring 28 points in the final 5:46 while holding Ashland to seven points to go into the intermission holding a 53-32 lead.
"It started with our defense," said OSU Head Coach Thad Matta.
"Jamar came in and knocked some balls away and loosened things up for us. Once we got flowing in transition there it seemed to open the game up for us."
"We just picked up our pressure. All it was really was us letting them do whatever they wanted to do. All we did was pick up our pressure and get into the passing lanes," said OSU guard Ron Lewis.
Lewis, who sat out last season after transferring to OSU from Bowling Green, led all scorers with 18 points, but the offensive story for the Buckeyes was not one of a single stellar performance, but one of impressive balance.
All ten Buckeyes on the roster played in the game, with no player playing less-than 12 minutes. Everyone scored, with the no player scoring less than eight points. Sylvester Mayes, Brayden Bell and Matt Terwilliger each scored eight, J. J. Sullinger, Matt Sylvester, Je'Kel Foster and Jamar Butler nine each, Ivan Harris 10, Terence Dials 12 and Lewis 18.
"A lot of teams have 15, 16 guys, but they only play about eight people people. With our team we have ten people and we play ten people," said senior guard/forward J. J. Sullinger.
"I think it's a luxury. From one through 10 everyone can play, everyone can contribute, and there really isn't too much of a fall off," Sullinger said.
"I think it's something we're going to have to do. We need everybody involved," added Matta.
"I think maybe they wore down a little bit there at the end of the first half," said Matta.
The combination of OSU's numbers and some quick hands by Butler was too much for the Eagles. After their half-ending blitz, they outscored the Eagles 47-36 in the second half and led by as many 39 points in the second half.
"This is the second time I've seen them this year, we were here last Sunday, and they're certainly a deep team. They're big, deep, and extremely well-coaches," agreed Ashland Head Coach Ron Lyons.
The Buckeyes shot just over 55% from the field in the game, including 60.6% in the second half. Ashland, meanwhile, had trouble putting the ball in the basket, particularly in the first half when they shot just 38.5% from the field. The Eagles were also hampered by foul trouble. Leading rebounder Justin Brown picked up four fouls in the first half and fouled out early in the second half. The Buckeyes attempted 16 free throws, making 14 of them, in the first half, while Ashland had just two attempts from the charity stripe, making one.
The Buckeyes racked up an impressive 20 assists, eight of them from Butler and five from Mayes, but were guilty of 17 turnovers. Matta was asked if the turnover number concerned him.
"It does. There was a little bit of sloppy play. It is a little bit frightening because we've done a pretty good job (at practice)," said Matta.
The Buckeyes will open their regular season next Sunday when they take on Chicago State at the Value City Arena.

Game Notes:
* OSU Head Coach Thad Matta's starting lineup against the Eagles included Terence Dials, Je'kel Foster, J. J. Sullinger, Matt Sylvester, and Sylvester Mayes. Ron Lewis got the starting nod in the first exhibition game, but was replaced by Mayes against Ashland.
"I wasn't sure Ron was going to play today," said Matta of Lewis.
"He had jammed his toe on Friday morning's practice I think. I probably would have started Ron had he not been injured," Matta said.
* Both Ron Lewis and and Sylvester Mayes played in just their second games as Buckeyes in the exhibition. Both seemed more comfortable and at ease in this outing.
"I felt a little looser," said Lewis. "It's all just in playing games. The second game coming out you're always going to be a little looser than in the first game," said Lewis.
* The Buckeyes continue to tinker with the way they will utilize various players this season. J. J. Sullinger continues to see time at the power forward position after playing the small forward position last year and Ivan Harris is manning the small forward after playing at the power spot last year. Both players seem to like the change.
"I felt a lot more comfortable playing the three," said Harris.
Harris continues to work on being a more physical player that will take the ball to the rack.
"That's the main thing, to drive the ball to the basket and get fouls," said Harris.
Harris got to the line for three free throw attempts against Ashland and made two of those attempts.
"I only got to the line about eight times last year," said Harris.
Sullinger, meanwhile, had his second consecutive game with 10 rebounds. Matta thinks Sullinger could develop into an effective rebounder at the power forward.
"That's one of the things that I challenged him with is rebounding," said Matta.
"As you look at the tapes from last year there were signs of him being a really good rebounder, but it was part-time. We're trying to get him to be a full-time employee of the rebounding department of the Ohio State University basketball."

Looking at the box score...

I see Ashland's leader in foul outs from a season ago (Justin Brown) is keeping true to form. He logged only 23 minutes, but still managed to squeeze that fifth foul in.

Dials fouling out worries me. Wish I'd seen the fouls myself.

Everyone on the team shot at least 44% from the field (most were 50% and above) except Harris, who was 3-11. Again, didn't see the game or the shots, but 3-11 against a DII school screams 'shot selection' to me.

JBut had nine points (on three shots), eight dimes and one turnover. Going to be hard to keep that kind of production off the floor. Unless, of course, he gets suspended again for helping find a cure for cancer.

Other thoughts...

Love the idea of keeping J.J. down low. Syl's a rangy guy, and while they may have to do a little gameplanning/shuffling to make sure he's not guarding the Vince Griers of the world, I like him at the three. Something like

Je'Kel
Ron
Syl
J.J.
TDials

would make me plenty happy.

or a shooting funk. matta doesnt put up with poor shot selection real well. i had to miss the game, but im guessing hes just been in a funk lately. the first preseason game he had a small hitch at the top, and you could tell he and the staff was aware of it.

I sure hope so. Chicago State will be an interesting indicator of how they feel about him, since we'll be down to just eight joes. I don't have to work this Sunday, so hopefully I'll be at the game.

Shot selection is not much of an excuse for a 6'7" McDonald's AA in his junior year playing against a Div II school. A kid that meets that description should be going strong to the hoop and doing pretty much as he pleases. He had three put back in his face under the hoop and another near the basket that was simply a weak shot. The lack of a single personal foul in two games also says something about aggressiveness. I am not giving up yet, but Ivan has shown me nothing so far tihs season.
