2021 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Discussion about recruiting transfers:

There was a months-long chase of Henry To’o To’o that fell just short. There were rumors that LSU defensive back Elias Ricks was looking to transfer, and he that didn’t pan out. There’s still some waiting going on as the Buckeyes sort out whether or not it makes sense to add former 5-star linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. More recently, there’s been a quick consideration given to pursuing Kansas transfer and 2020 freshman All-American Karon Prunty, but it seems Ohio State isn’t sold on that idea either.

Those things all are interesting on their own. Add into that discussion the fact that on Thursday the Buckeyes hosted Jackson State transfer Daylen Baldwin for a visit — and offered him a scholarship — and it gets more interesting. The way Brian Hartline has recruited wide receivers in recent years it seems unusual to chase a FCS-level transfer.

But there are a few things to consider beyond the ridiculous run of top-level talent Hartline and Ohio State have brought in since 2019. What things?

So, pretty good year in recruiting, right?

Yeah, this is extremely adequate.....best I've ever seen in my 60+ years as a Buckeye fanatic. Now, all Day & Co has to do is put together the pieces into a cogent team that wins a few Nati's. Realize the juggernaut that is Nick Saban, and realize as well that Ryan Day is the first one to break tOSU's jinx against Clemson - and in a very convincing manner. Can even overlook the pasting that Bama put on my beloved Buckeyes, when factor in the Covid thing. I'm also starting to recognize that Day can exceed what Woody, Tress, and UFM accomplished at the helm. He's already leveraged what Urban put in place, and appears to have built loyalty within the troops (Mariotti, Pantoni, coaching staff, AND administration). Maybe we'll look back on these glorious days, and figure out that Ryan Day is mayhaps is the best of each of the previous coaches. At this point, he's doing everything right, and in his limited experience as a HC, has soared above tOSU's former coaches. Third year = Nati? The pieces are in place, the timing, unclear. New QB, well, these kids are coming in pretty savvy, and ready to rumble. We'll see if his coaching hires are capable of 'coaching up' these elite kids. I've become a believer....go Bucks!

Posted by: LordJeffBuck: Of course, the charts in the immediately preceding posts don't help much, because they basically prove that Ohio State owns Ohio when it comes to recruiting. The next chart eliminates Ohio State's 6 signees and adds in the next 6 signees from the top recruits in Ohio.

Note that the #31 recruit in the state, RB Kyree Young from Massillon Washington (3*, 86.21) was not included because he has not yet signed with anyone.

Just FYI: https://kentuckysportsradio.com/main/former-uk-football-recruit-kyree-young-killed-in-shooting/

“As a group, this may be one of the most mature and best groups we’ve ever had,” director of player personnel Mark Pantoni said in May before Tuimoloau and Ewers joined the class. “They came in day one, put their heads down and went to work … so it’s been exciting, and we’re very excited about their future.”

Even before it was known that Ewers would be joining the class, Ryan Day said at Big Ten Media Days that he expects the class of 2021 to make a major impact for the Buckeyes beginning this fall.

“You're going to see a lot of our guys play as freshmen this year, but that's because they earned it,” Day said.

Clearly, the future is bright for the Buckeyes thanks to this true freshman class.

If you want to get really bright, however, we can also adjust these numbers to include redshirt freshmen. If we do that, the percentages look like this.

Passing: 100%
Rushing: 72.5%
Receiving: 13.3%
Tackles: 19.7%
TFLs: 26.9%
Sacks: 35.7%
Interceptions: 42.9%
Passes Defended: 42.1%

And we don’t need to get into the fact that any player currently considered a sophomore is still technically a freshman in the eyes of the NCAA. But if you would like to see what the percentages look like when it comes to players who could technically be considered freshmen if they would choose to use their extra year of eligibility, here you go.

Passing: 100%
Rushing: 79.5%
Receiving: 41.3%
Tackles: 57.4%
TFLs: 42.3%
Sacks: 50.0%
Interceptions: 100%
Passes Defended: 73.7%

Steering this back to the current freshman class, there was always confidence that they would be a good group, but few expected so many of them to be getting starts at this point in time. Some of those starts have come because of injury, but it’s still an accomplishment to be able to handle a starting role as a rookie. Nobody is starting by default. The Ohio State coaches turned to their best options at every position and we’ve now seen four members of the 2021 recruiting class start games on offense or defense for the Buckeyes.

The 2021 group is 'proving out' to be pretty darn good. So good, that starters or near starters are transferring. Love that the WR left and is setting records at Bama....shows Hartline's depth at WR. Really don't believe that Day wants tOSU to become a 'transfer destination', like some teams have become (MSU, Rutgers, ?). I believe that once you get that reputation, the HS recruits will be a tad leery of signing up, or maybe not. Anyway, with the depth tOSU has, there isn't a real need to utilize the portal, unless they can cherry pick a superb one. Not certain that Paolotie (sp?) fits that bill, or there's something going on that is keeping him off the field. Maybe tOSU needs to go to the transfer portal to snag an up and coming DC, or co-DC. AND keep Coombs as he is a recruiting/developing CB genius. But methinks the Peter Principle was at work here - he was elevated one level past his level of confidence.

So fortunate this class is looking to plan out as good as advertised or better. Several true frosh have passed up veterans and have become integral to our team. I think we'd have another L or two this year without some of the guys in this class.

A lot like '95-'96 when all these new faces emerged that were going to be around the next 3-4 years.

I personally can't wait to see what a stud QB with 3 years of Ryan day coaching/playbook absorption look like.

Stroud is about to shred some records, hoping he somehow strikes the pose at the end of the year and that $100 bet on him when the odds were 28/1 (or something like that) pays off. But I hear you. You know Ewers and McCord are probably going to do the same thing once they learn the system. I don't see this train stopping on the offensive side.
