I started following recruiting in earnest in 2002 when it became possible with the advent of detailed on-line recruiting rankings that replaced the static newsletters from Bill Kurelic and Duane Long. Since then I have seen three different styles under three different coaches.

JT focused on Ohio first but also brought in some national big dogs. Ohio was necessary - JT was not a national name. The targets stayed pretty much the same throughout the recruiting cycle - but you never knew how it was going to play out. The battles went down to the wire and signing day was filled with drama - as many losses as wins.

Then came Urban. You never knew who we were chasing and Ohio sometimes seemed an afterthought. Suddenly some 4 star you thought we wanted was going elsewhere and a five star you had never considered flipped from a school whose mascot was tattooed to his arm since he was 5. Signing day had it surprises - almost always pleasant. But projecting a class? Forget about it.

And now we have a style that does my aging heart good. The middle of July and the class is almost full. The names have been relatively static for some time and unpleasant surprises have been few. Sure, it could all blow up down the road, but I don't anticipate that. There is something about this coach that kids are buying into at a deep level. I hope and believe that signing day will be simply a matter of tallying up the signatures.

Some have suggested that he has taken too many flyers on lower ranking kids too soon. I don't agree. The toughest kids to project are the big bodied OL and DL. And who are his three lowest ranking recruits? Three big bodied linemen - all from Ohio. Two are OL - the position we have had shortages in for some time. (Where are you now computerbuck? The cows are coming home to roost.)

Thank you Ryan Day. You don't have to stay at OSU forever. Just until I die. It shouldn't be that long.

And just looking down that list of the top 100, I'd be willing to bet we wind up with at least 11 on the list, possibly up to 15 if the stars align. I would consider over 10% of the top 100 being good. Then you have outstanding prospects from 101-250, including Lejond who jumped up a whole 100 spots.

Ohio State seems to be getting the 4- and 5-star out-of-state prospects who aren't really considering the Alabamas, Georgias, Clemsons, and LSUs of the CFB world, prospects like Jack Miller, Gee Scott, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Mookie Cooper, Cody Simon, Lejond Cavazos, and (I hope) Lathan Ransom, Bijan Robinson, Jaylan Knighton, Kourt Williams, and Jacolbe Cowan.

In other words, Ohio State is getting kids who don't want to play the recruiting game, who aren't waiting until Signing Day, who aren't announcing at some televised All-Star game, who aren't doing three-hat monte on ESPN. Urban lived for the recruiting game, and loved to go toe to toe with Saban, Swinney, etc. to sign the splashy recruits with maximum drama. Day is identifying kids who fit his program, and his locker room, and getting them into the fold early and without a lot of pomp and circumstance.

Exactly - and those are the kind of kids you want to build a program around - who wont lay an egg at Iowa or Purdue.

With today's commitment of 4-star safety Lathan Ransom, Ohio State moves into 2nd place in the 247 Composite rankings, with 288.74 points (#1 Clemson has 297.92 points).

Ohio State is 5th in average per recruit (10+ recruits), with 92.06 (trailing Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, LSU).

Ohio State is tied with Alabama for 3rd in the Rivals rankings (2569 points), trailing Clemson (2661 points) and LSU (2649 points).

Nobody cares about ESPN's rankings, so I'm not going to post them.

And were Ransom a Michigan recruit (God forbid), this 8th highest rated recruit for OSU would be their #1.

With the commitment of four-star safety Lathan Ransom to Ohio State on Tuesday, the Buckeyes' recruiting class of 2020 now ranks behind only Clemson as the No. 2 recruiting class in the entire country, according to 247Sports' composite team rankings. The Buckeyes were previously fourth in the rankings, but jumped Alabama and LSU with Ransom's commitment.

The B1G leaders:

#2 Ohio State with 20 commitments
#7 scUM with 22 commitments
#11 Penn State with 20 commitmants

This is probably going to happen, but Ohio State's place at the top of the 247 Composite will be relatively short. Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia should eventually move ahead of Ohio State, but I see the Buckeyes ending up at #4 when it's all said and done. A great class, that didn't seem like it was going to come together back in the spring.

So we have 6 more spots. Robinson, Knighton, and Ransom appear to be set in permanent marker. Kourt Williams is getting close to that level too. That leaves 2 more... could we get Ricks and maybe Broughton? That’s the dream scenario. Wow, what a class that would be for Day.
Down to 5.
:warmup:: Robinson and Knighton
Close to nanner time: Williams
Legit flip candidate: Ricks
Rounding out the class: Cowan or Bingley-Jones
Out: Broughton

Am I missing anyone?

I can almost guarantee new names will be popping up between now and NLOID. They need another DL and CB, so that’s where you’ll see new names imo.

Done at QB unless they add a lower ranked guy late
Done at RB after this month
Done at WR
Done at OL
Done at TE
Done at LB save a stud like Sewell
Done at Safety

Bingley-Jones is going to commit to North Carolina on August 3rd, so he's out.

I think that Cowan is a strong possibility, but he's tough to read. Also, the staff may be trying to work some last-minute magic with Broughton before going all-in on Cowan.

Don't be surprised if the staff gives out an in-season offer to a late bloomer type, especially if Ricks ends up elsewhere.

I'm still a little in awe in how impressive this 2020 class is that Day and Co. are compiling.

It's been talked about over and over how close this group is...not only the players but their families as well. Do no discount how important that can be.

Would put this class up there with the 2017 and 2018 classes that both finished #2 in the rankings. This class can still finish very strong just knowing how many of these players are expected to get ratings bumps (off the top of my head Scott, Cooper, Simon, Martinez and Hamilton should all move up with guys like Phillips, Ransom and Smith-Njigba also being possibilities).
