tOSU Linebackers History (Merged)

The recovery wasn't what was miraculous...what was miraculous was the fact there wasn't more damage to the knee in the first place. The injury wasn't near as gruesome as it appeared. McGahee also had top-notch operations and top-notch rehab.

it wasn't that... it was that mcgahee was back in less than a year... d'andrea has been able to sit out much longer because of his ability to redshirt and the presence of schlegal..

??????? He tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL!! There isn't much else in there to mess up.

True, but my point that the injury looked far worse than ligament tears, and although he tore up his knee about as bad as one could, he still made it back and was at least practicing, if not playing, within a year. I'm thinking that the injuries to Williams' and Worthington's knees weren't as bad as McGahee's.

This is a bit off subject from the current banter, but I was looking through former recruiting classes and noticed a LB recruit named Reggie Smith. I didn't follow this class close enough to really know anything about him, but he seemed to have pretty good measurables( 6-2, 235, 4.53). Was he another member of that class that had problems or is he still on the depth chart somewhere?

Edit: Nevermind, I checked the depth chart and he's not listed there...

Yeah I guess it doesn't look too bad...:shake:
Yeah...that camera angle makes it look like McGahee's leg was like snapped backwards or something. It's just the camera angle...obviously it's bad...but that camera angle makes it look like he shouldn't have a knee ever again.

But as far as this thread...dealing with linebackers. You know what else helps our whole situation? The fact that whether we land grant or not...we will have THE BEST linebacking recruiting class in the country. Wouldn't be a surprise if one or more of those guys help out in a BIG way!!!

You can check out our Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class thread which has a chart of all our scholarship recruits from the last five years. Smith was a member of the 2003 class who was an academic casualty.

Has anyone considered the possibility of Kerr playing the Sam? Is that not the position he played at Indiana? Maybe Im wrong here but I swear it was. And he was pretty good there. That being said, if we land Grant, I think there is no chance Animal Jr. gets the start, it will be Grant, and our LB core will be solid enough to get it done.

Have you even seen Grant play? One of our most trusted experts (osugrad21) said he "plays too high" to be a starter at the Big Ten level right now. Laurinaitis filled in for Carpenter against Michigan and Notre Dame...who has Grant played against? This isn't NCAA 2006 where physical measurements mean everything...

Lil Animal did just fine in the last two games with Carp out, and is definately a favorite for a starting spot on experience alone, which cannot be underestimated in the Big Ten. He may not have sparkled in those two games, but when you're a frosh starting next to A.J. and Schlegal, who would? He more than held his own with two of the best LB's in the nation. He was far more than any of us expected as a TRUE FRESHMAN, and has a very bright future as a Buckeye. I already am a huge fan.

OHIO STATE INSIDER
Linebacker lineup shuffled

Friday, August 18, 2006Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Ohio State linebackers coach Luke Fickell revealed a different picture than expected Thursday in the battle to replace A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter.
Fickell said the current first-teamers are the same ones from the spring, but they're all at different positions. Sophomore James Laurinaitis is now at middle linebacker, sophomore Marcus Freeman is on the strongside and senior John Kerr, moved out of the middle, is on the weakside.
Behind them are junior-college transfer Larry Grant, Curtis Terry and Tyler Moeller, a freshman who has been getting a lot of attention with his nose for the ball. Freshman Ross Homan, so impressive during spring practice, has fallen behind while sitting out with a hamstring injury for about a week, and senior Mike D'Andrea has had more problems with his surgically repaired knee, putting in doubt his ability to get on the field.

Freshman Mark Johnson will redshirt with a shoulder injury, while Fickell ideally would redshirt at least one more freshman, which could be Euclid's Thaddeus Gibson.
Fickell expects to rotate linebackers as situations call for it during games, but he'd like each player to settle into one position.
"Whether or not there's a true one or a true two, they all need to go," Fickell said. "Hopefully, by the first two games you can see who has set themselves above and when it comes down to it, they'll produce."
