Game Thread tOSU at Penn State, Sat. Nov. 2, 12pm ET, FOX

Ohio State could win by 30 and people would still bitch. It's what this fanbase does. Self-loathing and whatnot.

I make a yearly observation around this time of year that most of the "fans" that inhabit Ohio State fandom wouldn't survive a 2002-type year.

The key is to survive and advance. 1 point or 30 points, doesn't matter.

Hell, could we survive a 2014? Maybe since expectations were lower, but 2OT at 7-6 PSU, close game against Minny, losing to a bad Indiana team until the 4th, very uninspired play vs Michigan. Doesn't mean anything will turn out well this year, but I'm trying to think back and I guess the overall expectations and criticism of scheme/development was a lot lower. That defense got turnovers and sacks, but gave up a lot of big plays and 22 ppg. The offense has stagnated until they were forced to adapt to Cardale.

they haven't put together what I would call a solid performance on offense all year
WHAT?! You don't think running every single play through your HBack in 2024 is a solid performance? What about when he snaps the ball and then runs out for a TD in the most obvious "this is what's about to happen" play ever?

Things were tempered early on that year by Braxton going down and especially after the Virginia Tech loss early on. there were some fun games in there too - beating up on Sparty, beating scUM wasn't uninspired as much as scUM was playing well above their heads, etc....

Ultimately, the 2002 team played well above its expectations. MoC had a lot to do with that, as he gave that offense an element it didn't have in 2003 (for instance).

Still hate Hoke, but he got every drop of talent out of his teams when they played OSU. And he did it without being a sniveling cheating POS.

There's criticism and then there's being a bunch of spoiled whiny bitches.

This fanbase is far into the spoiled category - to the point that the valid criticisms end up devolving into a bunch of 'woe is us' whining garbage. Add to that, a LOT of the fanbase is relatively recent, and doesn't have any type of historical knowledge or context, so the "never wins the big games" doesn't factor in how Urban and Tressel (early Tressel, he regressed to the mean as things went) were unicorns (also Thad Matta) in Ohio State's combined history in certain areas.

I personally don't know why anyone actually wants to coach here and deal with it beyond just the paycheck.
