Ohio State Dominates No. 14 Iowa, 31-14, to Start October with Statement Win

Ohio State started its monster month of October with a statement win on the road.

The Buckeyes dominated No. 14 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium, 31-14, to earn their first road win and first ranked win of the season.
In its first trip to Iowa City since its 55-24 loss to the Hawkeyes in 2017, Ohio State got revenge in blowout fashion. Another record-setting day by Jeremiah Smith led the Buckeyes to victory, as Smith became Ohio State’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns in the process of catching 11 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns, also making him the first-ever Ohio State receiver with back-to-back 200-yard games.

With the win, the fifth-ranked Buckeyes improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten play, starting their toughest month of the 2026 season exactly the way they needed to.

Key Moments

Q1, 14:19: Buckeyes force fumble on second play

The Buckeyes got the ball in the red zone just two plays into the game when Kenyatta Jackson Jr. strip-sacked Hank Brown and Christian Alliegro recovered the ball at the 14-yard line.

Q1, 13:24: McCuin scores 15-yard touchdown

Ohio State scored its first touchdown of the game on just its second offensive play as Iowa left Devin McCuin wide open over the middle of the field and Julian Sayin, with plenty of time to throw, found him for a 15-yard score.

Snap Counts: Ja’Kobi Jackson Plays Biggest Role Yet at Running Back, Khary Wilder Plays Zero Snaps vs. Iowa

164360_h.jpg

Thirteen Buckeyes played their highest snap counts of the season against Iowa, but a pair of frequently discussed freshmen saw no action at Kinnick Stadium.

As Ohio State’s offense tied its season-high with 75 team snaps against Iowa, 10 different offensive players played their largest snap counts of the season. Julian Sayin and all five of the Buckeyes’ starting offensive linemen were on the field for all 75 of Ohio State’s offensive plays. Ja’Kobi Jackson made his first start as a Buckeye at running back, and Nate Roberts, Mason Williams and Max LeBlanc all played season-high snap counts at tight end.

Defensively, freshman safety/linebacker Simeon Caldwell played his biggest role yet as a Buckeye with 26 snaps, while fellow backup safety Leroy Roker III (21) and No. 5 defensive tackle Will Smith Jr. (18) also played their highest snap counts of the year.

On the other end of the spectrum, freshman defensive end Khary Wilder didn’t play a single snap against Iowa after Ryan Day indicated last week that the Buckeyes were still looking for Wilder to play with more discipline within the defensive scheme to earn a bigger role. Freshman running back Legend Bey also played zero snaps for the second week in a row to start Big Ten play.

In total, 56 different Ohio State players saw action on offense, defense and/or special teams against Iowa.

Had a great time at the game yesterday. Weather was fantastic, tailgate was a blast! Seats at Iowa suck though. They really pack you in like sardines and once you get in...you aren't getting out. Toilets were clogged and leaking all over both restrooms I used. I mean are people really taking a dump during the game?

As for the game, we humiliated and outclassed Iowa obviously. But I continue to be absolutely perplexed with the offensive formations. Our best players are WRs and yet all game we continue to line up two tight ends with two WRs. Roberts was in there a lot flexed out in 3rd downs as a 4th WR. I feel like this offense with all the skilled weapons they have, could be scoring at will like an Urban Meyer team. I think Urban wins that game at least 49-14. Or maybe I'm just spoiled rotten because I'm a Buckeye. I don't know... it just seems so predictable and conservative and it doesn't feel like they play to their best strengths.

Other thoughts:
So great to see Jeremiah break two records in person. The Heisman pose was awesome! I love that he is advocating for the award this year. That catch over the middle between 3 defenders blew my mind, not just because it was a great catch but because Sayin had the courage to throw it. LoL! Sayin's confidence in JJ is clearly 1000%, just hope he isn't fixating on him all the time when other guys might be running free.

Gotta clean up all the penalties. There were 3 false starts on one series I think.

I like Jakobi Jackson a lot. He runs hard and his legs never stop driving. Seemed like he had a lot of YAC. Bring Bo in to back him up and please stop putting in West to run between the tackles.

A few DBs in there filling in that I thought did well. Cam Calhoun and Simeon Caldwell, who I had to look up because I didn't know who he was LOL. We have no super star on D, but the entire unit is playing solid.

Iowa's schedule is pretty ridiculous. They should be favored in every game the rest of the year (no ranked teams) so they likely end up with just one loss. It will make this win look better but means we may see them again. LOL!

That's all I got. Thanks for reading. Go Bucks!
