CFN sounds off on the 2010 Hawkeyes

2010 Iowa Preview

It?s one thing for Ohio State to play it close to the sweatervest and rely on great defense, excellent special teams, and a brutally effective offense to win in a less-than-scintillating type of Tressel Ball scheme, but it doesn?t always work for the teams without a second team full of five-star recruits. Ohio State playing conservatively is like Brad Pitt going with the James Hetfield look; it still sort of works. Iowa can?t quite pull it off in the same way, but it might not be a bad idea to try.

Key game: Nov. 20 vs. Ohio State. Penn State isn?t quite good enough to go unscathed and might not win the conference title even if it comes out of Iowa City with a win, so the key game for the Hawkeyes will likely be against the winner of the Ohio State ? Wisconsin showdown. The game against the Badgers is in the middle of the year, but the battle with the Buckeyes is the final home date of the year and could turn out to be for the Rose. After losing 11 of the last 12 in the series, Iowa is overdue to pull out a W
How the [censored] are they overdue to win. It's not a coin flip, and even then you're never due anything [/math nerd]. Iowa's lost 11 of 12 cause tOSU is generally the superior team. If he wants to predict an Iowa W this year there are about 1000 better reasons to pick them than a team that usually loses the game being due a win.

To add to their preview of the Hawkeyes, CFN provided a preview of this game (though it is mostly a collection of C&P from other articles).

Preview 2010 - Nov. 20 Ohio State at Iowa

With all the returning talent, a ton of promising depth, and the expected emergence of Pryor as a consistent star, the offense that finished 68th in the nation in yards and 49th in scoring should be far, far better.

College football's must-see games for 2010 season - ESPN
Tune in for these 20 games

6. Ohio State at Iowa, Nov. 20
This one could determine the Big Ten champion. Both teams are ranked in the preseason top 10. Both teams return a majority of their starters. A 27-24 win in overtime in last season's meeting punched the Buckeyes' ticket to the Rose Bowl.

Sheriff: Tailgating rules to burden jail

UI's new campaign will increase strain on county facilities, Pulkrabek says

Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek does not have fond memories of the 2006 night home football game against Ohio State, and it had nothing to do with the turnout of the game, which Iowa lost.
"The jail got to some dangerous levels of inmates," Pulkrabek said.
Now, Pulkrabek has similar concerns about gameday jail capacity in light of University of Iowa officials' announcement this week they would be taking a stricter approach with tailgaters this season.
The heightened approach to law breaking could mean more inmates at the jail on Saturdays, something officials never bothered to discuss with Pulkrabek, he said.
"I'm not real thrilled with it," Pulkrabek said Thursday. "The university appears to be a little narrow sighted on it."
On Monday, UI Public Safety Director Chuck Green, UI Athletics Director Gary Barta and interim-Vice President of Student Services Tom Rocklin unveiled the "Think Before You Drink" campaign. Officials said police working around the stadium will put a greater emphasis on existing laws such as open containers of alcohol and public urination. Additionally, UI now is putting a stop to drinking in university parking ramps and lots one hour after the game is over and halting all tailgating activities after two hours in the ramps and lots.
UI on Thursday clarified the end of the game to mean when the stadium is "substantially empty."
Police also will be setting up vehicle safety check points after the game to look out for drunken drivers.
The increased enforcement undoubtedly will have an influence at the jail but how big of an influence remains to be seen.
"We're just trying to figure out how it's going to impact us," Pulkrabek said.
Home football games always have meant extra steps at the jail. With 80 to 90 inmates already housed out of county, the jail makes additional room for gamedays by shipping even more inmates out of county, the cost of which is passed on to the taxpayers in Johnson County. Pulkrabek said in years past, he housed an additional 15 to 20 inmates out of county; this year, he's ramping it up to 30.

Tony Gerdeman looks at the Hawkeyes. Last year's was rough, but I hope they're not complaining about their conference road schedule this year.

Ozone

3. (tie) Iowa

Predicted Finish
9-3 (6-2)

Two-Cent Overview
Everybody's All-American (without ever even being named All-Conference) Ricky Stanzi returns at quarterback, and he'll be handing the ball off to at least two talented running backs, and throwing the ball to at least two talented receivers. Fittingly, only two talented offensive linemen return from last year's starting lineup. The defense returns one of the best front fours in the nation, but they'll be looking for two new linebackers. The secondary will be a strength as long as safety Tyler Sash is slinking around back there.

Schedule
Sept. 4 Eastern Illinois (W)
Sept. 11 Iowa State (W)
Sept. 18 at Arizona (L)
Sept. 25 Ball State (W)
Oct. 2 Penn State (W)
Oct. 16 at Michigan (W)
Oct. 23 Wisconsin (W)
Oct. 30 Michigan State (W)
Nov. 6 at Indiana (W)
Nov. 13 at Northwestern (L)
Nov. 20 Ohio State (L)
Nov. 27 at Minnesota (W)
