Ohio State edges out Arizona State for top student enrollment
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) ? Enrollment figures show Arizona State University no longer has the nation?s highest public university enrollment.
Ohio State University?s Columbus campus has the most students with 51,818 this year. ASU is second with 51,324 students.
ASU?s Tempe campus enrollment fell by 378 students since last year while Ohio State grew by 1,314 students in Columbus, according to enrollment reports released by the universities.
At just one year, the top title was short-lived for Arizona. In the past, OSU has usually been No. 1 in enrollment.
?We have tended not to brag too much about it and just kind of note that it?s there,? OSU spokeswoman Amy Murray said. ?Because, quite honestly, next year we might not be there.?
ASU administrators attributed the Tempe enrollment decline to the University?s emphasis on growth at its other campuses.
?Having the largest single campus in the United States is not, and never has been, our goal,? ASU spokeswoman Terri Shafer said in an e-mail. ?Our objective is to provide access to an excellent education for as many of the state?s citizens as possible.?
